Traveling with gun – visit to Mexico

Bury it in the desert

Perfect. I like it. Just don't let the drones, surveillance balloons, DEA, INS satelites see you digging the hole. And the sensors, can't forget those. And DO NOT start digging @ 36 dg 33" n / 34dg / 31"e. I have, er, a few items safeguarded.

When I was in Alaska and wanted to go into Canada, I just stashed it in the forest a mile or two from the border station, and took GPS coordinates. Write them down (the coordinates) just in case. Don't let anyone see you, or if they do, pretend you are taking a leak or something!

It has been about 5 years, but last time I went to Rocky Point I remember seeing a business in Ajo that had a sign out advertising temporary storage for people going accross the border. The sign even said something along the lines of "secure gun storage available". Don't know if it is still around, but you might try checking in the Ajo area. Also there is a small facility on the U.S. side in Lukeville where you can get Mexican insurance and information, I recall that at the time they did have coin operated lockers there. Might be worth calling or having someone do some recon for you.

Mexican authorities have even less of a sense of humor than our own AFTE.

Oh, they have a sense of humor, all right. They think it's damned funny to extort whatever money they can from you, and/or leave you rotting in jail when you need medical treatment to keep you alive, things like that. It's a very traditional sense of humor, like what led to scalping, crucifixion, feeding people to lions for entertainment, that sort of thing.

I also grew up near the border, and lived even closer for 25 additional years. Went there a lot, once upon a time. They can take their whole damned country and shove it you know where.

The best advice I can think of? Just don't go to Mexico.

Safe deposit Box

I don't know about other banks, but I know mine and most likely others will not let you store a firearm in a safe deposit box. Definitely read the fine print on the agreement if anyone tries this.

+1 to this entire post. I figure we have digressed to the point of lockout. If so, AB deserves the last word--By the way, I will be in Laredo tomorrow fully loaded; let's hope I don't take a wrong right turn.

leave it with your relatives , then get it on the way out. Or find a local gun club president to hold it for you. Most gun owners are pretty straight up folks

take it to a gunshop/gunsmith... pay him the $20-ish bucks for a detailed cleaning and go over... he'll give you a claim ticket... let him know it will be a bit before you can pick it up NO paperwork to get it back as long as you're the one picking it up... cheaper than a safe deposit box... more secure than a bus station locker... doesn't matter what state your in, so long as it isn't NY, IL, etc...

Best idea I've heard yet!

Storage

I'm the onsite manager of a self storage a block off I-10 in Tucson. I'll rent you a 5x5 unit and you can put what you want in it.

I went to Mexico one time. I found out that there's no good thing there that I can't get over here and there are a lot of bad things there that I don't want any part of. I'll never get out from under the American flag again.

Honestly, I would feel uncomfortable not packing in 'ole Mexico, and I'd feel uncomfortable leaving my gun buried somewhere (since that seems to be the only viable option in that area according to above posters). That being said, I have been working on cars long enough to find a place to hide the gun during my trip. Under the intake manifold comes to mind, or between the gas tank and the tank cover, or taped on top of the bellhousing, or inside the dash after the glovebox is removed, etc, etc, etc.

I know that breaks international law, but that's what I would do. Granted, I'd never be in that situation.

and, if caught, you'd feel even more uncomfortable sitting in a Mexican prison

Traveling to Mexico's customary tourist spots should be OK - traveling in remote areas, especially near the border, has been labeled as ill-advised due to current drug issues. Many of the better dove hunting spots are having a hard time because of their location in regard to the drug trafficking issues. Be careful, do not bring a handgun or even one round of ammunition with you

Mexico

Any military caliber is illegal in Mexico. Such as .45, .38super, anything the mexican police or army use is illegal for anyone else. In fact, you couldn't pay me enough to go back to Mexico. I went once in high school, to Monterrey, and we had lots of fun. That was before the drug wars, etc. Will never go back.
