I'll be going to SC this weekend.

They honor my NC CHL, but I have some questions about the firearms laws, and if carrying is a good idea.

I'll be staying at a hotel, and on hangunlaw.us ( http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/USOffLimitsN-W.pdf )

offlimits said:
Carrying concealed weapons into residences or dwellings. No person who holds a permit issued
pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23 may carry a concealable weapon into the residence
or dwelling place of another person without the express permission of the owner or person in
legal control or possession, as appropriate.

offlimits said:
Into "any publiclyowned
building, without the express permission of the authorities in charge
of the premises or property" (Section 1623420(
a)) .

Not to mention, it seems similar to NC in that
offlimits said:
Into any establishment where alcohol is served for consumption on premises. This includes
restaurants

So....I'm thinking carrying while staying at a hotel is a bad idea. And given that most places we will be having dinner serve alcohol, this is even more of a bad idea.

What are your thoughts/suggestions?

In South Carolina if you do not have a SC concealed weapons permit then you may carry in the car in the glove compartment, console if it has a closing lid or in the trunk. It's a crying shame that adjoining states do not recognize each others carry permits.

As a person that has to go into S.C. regularly, I can give you this information; Do not go to South Carolina. The entire state is the biggest speed trap in the country! They have tight laws as they pertain to transporting a firearm across state lines, and they only honor a few of their neighboring states carry permits. Plus, they have a below average football team who have zombie fans that blindly repeat year after year-(wait 'till next year) LOL!

Stay below the speed limit on I85 if you're coming through the Upstate area.....there has been some kind of joint task force effort on 85 all week long, State police and county law on every exit......I haven't seen a car pulled over yet with a SC plate on it, but they are hammering the out of state cars........

You're ok for the hotel (since you have a carry permit that SC honors).

From SLED's website (http://www.sled.state.sc.us/sled/default.asp?Category=sccwp&Service=StateGunLaws):

SECTION 23‑31‑230. Carrying concealed weapons between automobile and accommodation.

Notwithstanding any provision of law, any person may carry a concealable weapon from anautomobile or other motorized conveyance to a room or other accommodationhe has rented and upon which an accommodations tax has been paid.

You are fine in the hotel. Strong "Castle doctrine" in this state, and when you stay in a hotel THAT is your castle. You have no duty to retreat from anyplace you have a legal right to be.

You can't carry anyplace that serves booze, even if you don't imbibe yourself, and that includes restaurants where you can order wine/beer with your meal.

Other than that, you should be good to go. Don't know about the speed trap thing, as I have SC plates now. :) But from what I've seen (I77, I95, I20 & I26) traffic moves right along here.

A hotel is neither publicly owned nor a dwelling. You're fine to carry there. As a matter of fact, once you've paid for the room you can carry concealed from the car to the room even if you do not have a permit.

Whereabouts in the state are you staying?

I'll be at myrtle beach. This will be our family vacation, probably the only vacation we get for a while. Our second kid is due in January. :)

Thanks for all the info!
(especially about the speed traps, I'll be sure to go the speed limit there)

I think I'll carry my Jframe, since its the easiest to conceal.

Gotta love that castle doctrine!
Maybe one day we'll get some of that....and get rid of roy cooper (Bob Crumley for Attorney General!)

You can do in SC just about anything you can do in NC with your permit. As was posted earlier, go to SLED's website if you have any questions.

Remember, internet advice is worth what you pay for it.

DO NOT GO THROUGH McBEE!!! Be careful all the way through Darlington County, if yopu are going that way.
