trend towards no BUIS?

A half an hour after the balloon goes up, iron sights will rule the world.
Why on earth will that be true? The ACOG will last until it gets broken (tritium will fade is all) and the Aimpoints will run for years always on. Up to the 10 year shelf life of the battery in it and a spare in storage on the gun somewhere if you turn it off between use. If the world ends, I'll be running my far superior optics for many years or until I get killed, whichever comes 1st. Then, many years later, I guess I'll pop it off and go irons...

I believe he was referring to an EMP/CME event. It is said to destroy everything that has integrated circuitry and not hardened. i.e. RDS

exactly. I'm just saying that the people who feel BUIS are necessary for a red dot, do not put a backup IR laser on their rifle, even though more than half their shooting will be at night.

even though I'm just a civilian, I shoot at night with an IR laser more often than in the daytime, and figure if I ever "need" an AR, it will be at night. If I could get a reasonably low cost, unobtrusive, super light weight back up IR laser, I would. I think the odds of an IR laser failing are WAY higher than an aimpoint or eotech failing.

As you stated, a backup IR laser isn't exactly as small, lightweight, nor as inexpensive as BUIS. It's because of that I don't understand the purpose of bringing it up. While I believe I understand the point you were making in that an IR is more likely to fail than a red dot, I can't figure out the larger point you were trying to make.

Would you mind elaborating on the point?

I see what you're saying, but you gotta keep in mind the cost of a set of BUIS versus the cost of a quality IR laser and whatever other gear (I assume NV of some sort) to be compatible with it. What's the cost difference? Even if you're running the highest quality BUIS, about 10x more for the IR/NV setup? Even higher?

Then, aside from the cost, there's the education and knowledge. Most anyone who shoots knows how to use irons, or can learn to at least use them semi-competently without much trouble. IR/NV? Well... I grew up around guns, firearms are basically my only real hobby, and I served in the military (and deployed to a combat zone during active conflict) - and I know literally *nothing* about IR/NV. Wouldn't have a clue what to look for in terms of buying, and wouldn't have a clue how to use it after I bought it. Assuming I could afford it, which I can't.
