First of all, I don’t have cable or satellite TV, have never watched “South Parkâ€, and didn’t even know it existed until I started reading reviews about “Team America: World Policeâ€.
My wife (a very young 60) and I (58) went to see TA:WP this afternoon. It was better than I anticipated, and we liked it. There is one issue or short theme (proof of loyalty) for which we didn’t care, and we thought it was unnecessary, but the remaining 95% of the movie was just fine.
It does not take political sides, but it is pro-gun, anti-terrorist, anti-Hollywood, and anti-Kim-Jong-Il. They make fun of many liberal actors (not by implication, but by using their real names), and include Michael Moore in their satire.
Yes, it is vulgar; there is a lot of swearing, sex-innuendo, and explicit ‘puppet nudity’ and graphic ‘puppet sexual activity’. There also is a lot of violence and gore, a-la Kill Bill, but puppet-style. Most of the humor is original, and we found ourselves LOL several times.
They ‘borrow’ from many movies, such as “Star Warsâ€, “Crouching Tiger…â€, “The Matrixâ€, and others. I was impressed by the details, the puppet-type special effects, and the overall production of the movie.
We are glad we went to see it, but it may not be for everyone. I don’t believe it is appropriate at all for young kids, but I am not sure how to define young anymore.
