Interesting reasoning, but incomplete
Yes, Moore has a huge ego. And yes, liberals will turn on themselves to avoid placing blame where it really belongs. But these aren't the main factors in the turnaround.
Moore was a shoo-in for "Best Documentary". Had he accepted that, he would have gotten another statuette, and been in a position to deliver another rant to millions of viewers. But "Best Doc" is not where the fortune and fame lie. That's in Best Picture. Best Picture guarantees a post-Award re-release, and lots more revenues. That was the goal.
Problem is, it's one thing to attack Republicans and gun nuts-Hollywood liberals love that. But trying to use strong-arm tactics to affect their own business and revenues? That crosses the line. With Bush in office, none of the people in power want "Fahrenheit" anywhere near a movie screen again, for fear of a backlash and the resulting impact on revenues.
