New to the ar world. Bought a Ruger 556. Great little rifle. Purchased for fun at the range and a little hog hunting. Problem is the horrendous trigger. Would like something that breaks clean, doesn't feel gritty, not an excessive amount of take up or over travel and possibly adjustable weight. If not, about three pounds. What would the pro's recommend? Thanks.

Geiselle HS NM and G2S-E, Bushmaster NM, Rock River NM or Varminter. Those are the only 3 which get my money. Lots of other good ones out there, but in their price points, these 3 brands do what I want.

The only downside, for me, with the RRA NM or Varminter triggers is the fact they are upside down compared to these others. The RRA has a light primary with a heavy break, whereas the others are a heavier primary take up with a very light break. I prefer the light break type.

Lots of places having sales on Geiselle right now. They are mostly 2 stage triggers and the ssa-e would probably be closer to what you want. The Larue MBT is excellent and on sale for $99 right now.

If you are looking more at single stage I like the Velocity trigger. They make a 3.5lb model. Also, Hyperfire has the 24e and some other variants that are adjustable and they are really good triggers as well

These are all great suggestions and quality products. You purchased a basic 'entry' rifle most likley because of budget. Which is fine. You have stated, plinking and hunting one particular animal, which indicates occasional use.

The only criteria my suggestion will not fill is adjustable. MidwayUSA Ar-Stoner replacement trigger on sale right now item # 407819 $25bucks. Add a replacement hammer spring out of this pkg item # 579878 for $10bucks. If you like, just add the trigger & disconnector spring to your ever increasing parts box that you don't have yet. But will hehe:uhoh: You will have a traditional type trigger, greatly smoother, and a better pull. Puts it right at 4# +- .

And in keeping with your budget rifle, save beaucoup in the green $$ -think 'make Momma happy' hehe

Wish you the best on your research and holiday weekend

I've used Timney in the past for bolt action builds, so I am familiar with the brand. Appreciate all the great insight. I'm not completely understanding the two stage trigger. What is it's intended purpose over a single stage trigger.

Being a firearms lover for so many years, I can easily see a parts box in my future. Yes I bought entry level because of price point. Back in the day ar's were very pricey to me, especially not knowing much about them.

agreed.

my personal opinion is that the standard AR FCG is pretty good, although some examples are pretty crappy. A 'blueprinted' AR FCG will come in around 5 lbs, and has a good feel to it. I've greatly improved stock out of the box triggers by simply cleaning the edges of the bearing surfaces with a stone, and cleaning and lubing.

I think for most shooters, spending the money on better ammo and more range time instead of trick triggers yields a better result.

In most cases it's a safety feature, allowing you to have a light, crisp break hiding behind some initial take up. You can operate it like a single stage when things get hairy or utilize the reset for well timed and precise shots.

I disagree. I think dollar for dollar a good trigger helps more than anything else. If you don’t want to spend $225 on a great trigger. I get it. But you should be able to get a good trigger for $150. How much good ammo can you get for $150 anyway?

AS Orcon said above, it allows for a little additional safety for a light crisp trigger. IF you shoot a polymer striker fired pistol, some of their triggers are very 2-stage like.

I've got 3 of the Geissle SSA-Es which are their 2 stage triggers with a 3.5lb "total" trigger pull. 2.3lbs of "take-up" for the 1st stage and only 1.2lbs for the 2nd stage or break point. Or in a pinch such as a defensive use you pull straight through. Another added benefit is the reset is quite a bit shorter than the .mil trigger, so it's faster on follow up shots without excessive trigger finger movement. Positively my favorite trigger for a carbine that plays multiple role.

A friend of mine has a Larue MBT which is very SSA-E like, but at a much more reasonable cost. Another great source for Geissele SSA-Es is to watch the Palmetto State Armory deal for the day. They often have Geissle triggers on sale with 10 free PMAGs and free shipping. That's how I bought 2 of mine.

Can't agree more, 3 things I look at to increase accuracy in the gun itself:

Trigger
Barrel
Optic

A good trigger will just make a rifle that much more enjoyable.

Appreciating all of your insight guys. Is it possible to get a single stage trigger without a ton of take up? More like the trigger on a good bolt action I guess.

Google " truth about guns trigger test" . They did a pretty comprehensive test if many single stage triggers available. They tested take up, reset etc using a machine and have graphs of how all the different triggers performed

You might want to look into a free floating handguard also. A wizbang, match trigger will undoubtedly make the act of shooting more enjoyable but it may not make a marked improvement in accuracy or precision.

I paid through the nose for an FN A4 clone and it shoots about as well as I'd expect from a service grade M16, about 1.5-3 MOA depending on the ammo. However, the minute I put a bipod on it became a 6 MOA gun; the KAC RAS is not a free-float system. Seems a shame to have all that rail space and not be able to use any of it.
