New to black powder, just got a 1847 Walker. The only thing I could find in stores near me now is Triple 7 FFG, which I have read is fine with this gun (vs FFFG). I'd like real black powder, that's tough at the moment.

Triple 7 is hotter than black powder? How/when do I take this into account when loading? If I wanted to shoot 40 grains of real black powder in the Walker, do I need to use less than 40g of Triple 7?

Thanks

I've never used it but just wanted to say congrats on grabbing a Walker. Randy Wakeman says, "Triple Seven and Black Mag3 are far hotter (or more energetic) than good old black powder, and produce higher velocities and pressures."

I was fortunate to find a supply of Swiss and that is the most energetic BP I've used, driving a .457 RB to 1282 fps with a 55gr charge of 3F.

What Duster said.

Hodgdon recommends a 15% reduction. A 40 grain load would be the BP equivalent of 46 grains. Being 2f it will burn a bit slower than 3f. Some folks don't follow the 15% rule, others do. I've used a lot of that stuff and it's good.

Thanks everyone. Can't wait to shoot this beast. It's not the most ergonomic thing out there, probably not everyone's first choice for a black powder pistol. As a Texan, I don't care! I'm all for a spectacle every now and then.

Hodgdon recommends avoiding compressing 777. Just eliminate air space between ball and powder, no need to crunch the projectile down hard. When using 777 for light cowboy action loads, I simply used it like regular Blackpowder. If I were going to load an antique/Damascus firearm with charges over 100 grains, I would likely calculate the 15% reduction, but geez it’s not uranium.

I never owned a Walker. I’m jealous!

You really should correct the arbor on that Walker before getting too carried away with full house loads. Ubert has never fixed the problem, this is a new Uberti? I have personally seen Walkers self destructing because of the short arbor including one of mine.

This may be off topic, or not, but why does Uberti make short arbors? Do they not agree that there is a problem?

Is the company in denial that this issue exists?

They don't see it as a problem. They see it as a benefit, being able to adjust cylinder gap with the wedge.

I always load a 20% reduction by volume comparing 777 to 3f black powder since my chronograph shows that level of reduction to approximate black powder velocities. For the 1851 in .36, 19-20 grains of 777 replicates full chamber loads of Old Eynsford.

Yes, it's new and I will address the arbor and a few other things. Sorry about one of yours, not fun.

That's the reason I fix em for others, I was able to fix mine along with lots of improvements, it's a good accurate shooter.

Note that 777 is a typical fake powder to be loaded by volume, not weight.

How far down will a C&B rammer push a ball over a reduced load? Or must he use non gunpowder filler?

Some folks get bit by the purest bug and nothing else will do for them but the holy black. I'm happy if it goes bang and sends a ball down range. T7 is a substitute that works for me and lots of others. If it was not so expensive these days I would shoot more of it.

Its always been too expensive for me.
