Sorry for this newbie question but do any of you black powder shooters use Triple Seven FFG in your revolvers?

I'm just starting out shooting muzzleloading pistols and I can't find real black powder anywhere locally. I plan on making an order later on down the road when I can afford to order a few pounds of it. Anyhow, there's a place here locally that has Triple Seven FFG and I thought I would try it.

Appreciative of any help with this...Thanks!

It will work fine

just not a complete burn , less octaine than 777 FFFG . None of these revolvers get a complete burn out of short barrels anywyaz , not even with FFFG-777 .
My Dad shot only 2ff in my Dragoon for years . You'l be fine if thats all you can get . It surely aint gonna hurt it ! :D

Cheers , Jaeger

Oh wow, I had complete cerebral flatulence going on there.

I mean to type FFFG instead of FFG, sorry about that!

Good to know that about FFG though.

Well then

now your really good to go ! :D

Cheers, Enjoy the Sport , its AWSOME !

PS, please make sure you get a hold of some 3F Real Goex or something too , its a seriously different experience than the Fake Powders . A very COOL one :D

It's more powerful and produces more recoil so use 15% less volume for an equivalent load per the Hodgdon instructions.
Load less at first if shooting a Colt or brass frame to get to know the powder and it's effects.
Try not to over compress it for more consistent velocity.
It does burn cleaner.

Welcome to the site and to blackpowder pistols. You are in excellent company here. Many learned folks around who are very generous with knowledge and advice. Good luck and good shooting!:)

Are there any ignition issues with Triple Seven? I've read about Pyrodex being a little difficult to ignite...

No problems

I have never experienced any problems lighting off any of the Fake Powders , especailly Tripple 7 . Other than Pyrodreck being old once , it still lit off no problem , but less performance than I used to get out of the bottle is all .

Pyrodex makes good fertilizer.Triple Seven burns cleaner, and is flatter shooting than any of the other subs.In fact It's the only sub I'll even use anymore.BP,real black powder, is cheaper though.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll think I pick up a pound or two of it tomorrow. I can't wait to try the real BP soon as well.

Thanks again!

I shoot 777 in my Remmies all the time. Pay attention to the post that said don't compress it. With the ball just seated on the powder or "slightly" compressed it is great. Compress it and it does wierd things and the inside of your barrel will look like the grand canyon after six shots. I use 6gun4fun's loader and it makes precise loading a breeze.

I suspect most of the Pyrodex ignition issues are with flintlocks; like all synthetic black powders it has a higher ignition temperature than real black and as a result can be difficult to ignite using a bp primer. As mentioned above, 777 has the additional characteristic of being sensitive to overcompression.

Pyrodreck

is not a synthetic Black powder , tis a Black Powder substitute . It isn't made to have back powder attributes , it was developed to completely get away from the non-sence of Black Powder being highly corrosive ( which its not unless wet on steel ) and produce simular velocitys in real Black Powder guns with less smoke and easier cleaning . The only thing it got right is velocity and less smoke . Its highly corrosive , it'sa bear to clean up , very unstable or inconsistant when it has any age on it but fresh . It is a failure at best .

Yes I have had plenty of misfires with Triple Se7en substitute powder in "Revolvers" ... probly do to not being able to compress the loads at all or much ...
I'm a strictly Black Powder Burner and always have been for about 30 years. If you want Black Powder it can be ordered to your door.
What works is what you like to work with or can make work for you. I have no faith myself in anything being as responsive, accurate, as much fun to shoot, and as easy to clean as Black Powder itself.

Hmmm, I haven't had one missfire in over a pound of 777 fffg. I have been using CCI #11s, as well as the #11 magnums. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I've used both CCI 10 & 11 and Remington 10 & 11 caps ... should not need any Mag caps in a C&B Rev.
Anyway like I said probly to do with all the Black Powder loadin' I've done ... I jus' don't like it and have had misfires with it, put it away and shot trouble free with Black Powder.
So go figure thems my results, what would you think if they were your results?

Well I went out and shot the Walker with the 777 on Sunday, man what a blast it was to shoot! I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable afternoons I've ever spent shooting. Can't wait until the weekend so I can do it all over again!

I shot about 6 or 7 cylinders and didn't have a problem with the powder at all. The only misfire I had occured when I had a cap fall of the nipple and I attribute that to operator error. I used a 40 grain charge the whole time I was shooting and had no problems hitting paper. I might fiddle around a shoot it from a bench this weekend to really see what it can do.

Two questions though: how often do you guys take apart the lockwork for cleaning? If you don't take it apart after every shooting session, how do you clean/lubricate the lockwork?

About keeping the internals clean from another thread, check out the pictures:

Pohill uses powdered graphite on the internals & inside of his frame.

Hellgate's method is called the "oily crud" system.
Hildo also uses that method with his Walker and posted some pictures of the oily crud and how well it protected the parts.

Thanks for the post, definitely some points to ponder there. Man I almost had a heart attack when I saw how cruddy those innards were though!
