Truck gun.

Put something you already own in a decent full coverage holster. Even a crap gun shouldn't be rattling around in a glove box or under the seat.

My idea of truck gun.....

Yeah, my idea would be an old beater, 12 ga., a singe brrl. or
even an old bolt action Mossberg, 12 ga.

They are cheap, $70 or $80, certainly less than $100.
Throw in a box of # 4 shot shells, a handfull of double-aught, &
a half dozen slugs. That'd cover about any situation, I'd be likely
to run into. From a busted-up deer, to whatever else.
It has so far. OBTW, I CCW a SP101, .357 mag.
Take care.

CZ-52-its supposed to have good penetration.
With a Mosin, or other cheap rifle, a cheap rimfire, and and a shotgun too.

That's not a truck gun... THIS is a truck gun...

I carry a Springfield M6 under the back seat in my Wrangler. Fits nicely, has .22 and .410 barrels. I've got different types of .22 ammo from cb22 to stingers for most occasions, then I've got buckshot, slug, #4, and #8 shot for the .410 as well as .410 flare rounds. It ain't fast but, it'll do the job.

The gun in the picture below is what my Dad carry's in his truck. From Keltec.. His even has a 40 round mag. Do NOT cut him off in traffic!!

If there is a gunshoe near you, look there as well, and go the last half of the last day. You might be surprised what you can find, and just how dealable the dealers might be. I have bought several guns much lower than they were tagged during those hours. Also check your local pawn shops.

CZ 52 is pretty decent gun for the money. There's alot of good choices though already mentioned, that are newer and proven reliable. I like the Ruger variety. Built heavy and reliable.

Just my unexpert opinion. You can get brand new sw sigma glock copy in 9mm or 40sw for around 250. Big 5 here sells the Mosin Nagant ( 7.62x54r) for 89$. If a weapon is designated to kept in vehicle, why restrict it to a handgun?

a nice variety of suggestions here...

as far as the retort to my original post...the rifle that I am pondering is for 'woods tromping' not handling up close & personal encounters; the SP101 that is kept up front with me is my primary go to gun;

sorry that I missed the budget restrains...a used S&W 10 or used S&W 15 might fit the bill with a proven hollowpoint like the FBI load (lead semiwadcutter hollowpoint weighing 158 grains and loaded to .38 spl +p powder levels)

When I think of a truck gun, I think penetration. An AK, a 6" 357 w/ 180 gr. hard cast, a Glock 20 with 200 gr. hard cast. Not a 9mm. I want something that will go through two doors and two people. Insurance is there for a reason. Let em' steal it. That's what you carry for. I'd go for the AK.

Interesting... This thread is exactly a year old. Members were suggesting a Model 10 Smith for $150 a year ago. They cost $230 - $240 in NH today. What does that tell you about the price of used Smiths? I may just go Smith hunting soon. :)

Truck guns I've known and used:
'58 Remington, various pistol-gripped 12 ga, Ruby .38 spl, Ruger Super Blackhawk, M1 Carbine folder, Ruger Security Six .357, Norinco 213, various SMLEs, Rossi .32 long, various Win 94s, RG 66, and many others.
Figure one long gun, one short gun, and often one hide-out GTH gun.

That budget of under $200 including ammo is going to be tough to meet if you want a gun that will stand up to regular practice.

I agree that a used .38 service revolver is a good option and less likely to be a headache than a used auto at that price.

Basic Taurus/Rossi/Charter Arms snubbies can be had new for $250-300 as can the base-model Ruger or S&W polymer autos. The best deal in used pistols I know of right now are the German police trade-in SIG P6/225 in 9mm, all-steel SIG quality, carried much and shot little, for the same price.

Wrong forum....

Go for something in 7.62X25. CZ 52s and some Tokarevs (or their variants) are very affordable. They also shoot right through cars, which could come in handy with a weapon kept primarily in a vehicle. Unless one hits a power window motor dead center, nothing in a vehicle door will stop a 7.62X25. It's a wild caliber.

Sorry, revolver forum.

I leave an SP101 in my truck most of the time, loaded with Winchester Silvertip hollowpoints. It was $350, sure, but I'd rather have a revolver for a passenger to grab than a big shotgun that one of us would need to get to, wasting time. I figure if, between my regular carry piece and the revolver, that doesn't handle it, a shotgun wouldn't help all that much anyway.

So I keep a rifle in there, too. :D

If you want something inexpensive and know someone who has a C&R look at the CZ82 9mm Makarov you get the gun, full flap holster, 2 mags and cleaning rod for about $200. Ammo is plentiful and not all that expensive or hard to find. More powerful than a .380 not as much as a 9mm. The one I got has been uterly reliable and fairly accurate at 25 meters and in real nice shape and is pretty nice quality for the money.

That being said, mine is a 2.5" Smith Model 66. .357 due to ammo availablity anywhere I go. I keep it loaded with Federal 158 Lead Hollow Points with a couple of speed loaders of magnums as a back up.

Do not rely on a Russian Nagant for self defense!

I concur RE the CZ82...I had one a few years back (wish I'd been able tyo keep it!) and found I liked it for the same reasons I like Makarovs plus some additional refinement( and a bigger magazine). Just small enough to carry readily, and just big enough to shoot well under stress.Definitely an under-appreciated little gem!
