I’m looking at a general purpose fixed blade to leave in the cars for various uses. Nothing stands out in particular for use but could be opening boxes, cutting strings/twine/rope, cutting packaging, etc. I keep rope and paracord in my truck box.

I am thinking a partial serrated blade for the possible cordage use and the remote emergency case of a seatbelt (We have resqme tools in the cars already).

Initially I am leaning towards the Kabar #1259. Good price point for multiple purchases (3), a known blade and steel.

I have considered the ESEE RC3 and it’s in the running but a small step in price. Going the other direction is a Mora which I could get all 3 for the price of a Kabar but no serrations (probably not a deal breaker). Ontario SP2 is another candidate but again lacking serrations.

What else is out there that I should look at? Would prefer to buy quality blades that I would enjoy owning versus a cheap throw away.

There were a couple that I was going to recommend, but they are now a lot more expensive than when I bought mine. IIRC I paid under $50 for these.

But that said, I have Mora's in each vehicle. The standard Companion runs around $15, but the Heavy duty version has a bit thicker blade and is I think a little more rugged knife; only $2-$3 more.

A couple more Mora's I like.

I really like the sheath design on this one.

I had actually just found the serrated Companion

Morakniv Companion Serrated Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade, 4.1-Inch https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00EAL14B4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_YaKFFbHSH8VRV

Any experience with the Mora serrations? I can find pages on the plain edge but very little on the serrated

I keep a k-bar under the back seat. I have a folder with a seat belt cuter and window smasher in the door. Tool box in the covered bed. Just in case. Not for defense, in case I need to help someone.

I have two Moras that I usually use for cooking out, the Companion is one of them. The other is the 8" All-purpose, but I should have gotten a heavier bladed one. Both are SS.

I keep a Schrade folder close to me, and this SOG I keep in my truck box...you never know. SOG Flip blade.jpg

I generally just keep an AFSK in my center console if I need anything more heavy-duty than one of the folders I have on me.

You might also consider the Glock 81. It is a lot of knife for $30-40. The 81 has the saw back, the 78 has a plain spine, and neither has serrations. It's been around a long time and is hell for stout.
I am not a Glock fan, but the knife is a good value.

Hi, do you know if there is any difference between Glock 81 and 78 except the saw back on 81?

Just picked up a copy of an Air Force survival knife at a pawn shop. It's slightly smaller than a real one which is a good thing. It lives in my glove box now. Sturdy enough to do what is needed, but not so expensive that it's going to pain me if something happens to it.

I find a good full size multi-tool more useful to leave in my truck than a fix bladed knife, I also keep a tomahawk (hammer rather than spike opposite the ax edge) and some other general tools with it. I frequently also have a saw, full size felling axe, and loppers in the truck too.

I have a Buck 119 and a Gerber multi-plier in the door pocket of my truck. I think your Ka Bar 1259 would be an excellent choice.

I keep Leatherman multitools in my vehicles. I find them very handy to have so many capabilities in a small package. On more than one occasion I have come to the rescue opening a bottle of wine while camping.

I have a daughter still in highschool and so knives are totally out. I am considering getting a WWII Ames folding shovel analog to go with her tool kit in the trunk. In my Infantry outfit we sharpend the two point angles to a good tool angle and the left side as sharp as the metal would allow ( as a joke I managed to get some to hair cutting). Besides digging these were good for light brush removal and when I was a teen I carried one in the trunk of my car (right next to the K98 Mauser, boy have times changed) and used it to dig out in front of bogged down rear tires to add sticks for traction ( it worked). I have to think a shovel in a cover in the trunk will not be the same as "Carrying a weapon" on campus, but in these crazy times one is never sure.

Does anyone make an inexpensive seatbelt cutter/glass breaker with no other blade than the guarded seatbelt cutter?

The ResQMe that I mentioned in my first post is exactly what you are looking for.
