Truglo Optics

I've done some searching but didn't come across much that was helpful; it all seemed to be referring to red dots only. I am looking for a low magnification (i.e. 4x, 6x, etc.) for my 16" AR, which currently sports a 1x Bushnell TRS red dot (which overall I am happy with). The rifle's primary role is punching holes in paper but must be able to fulfill a SHTF/WROL role if needed. Obviously, this means that I'm not going to be dropped into the middle of Mogadishu, but a "reasonable" level of preparation is important to me. I don't need a $1,000 optic but do want/need/appreciate quality. I have been looking at ~$300ish Leupold and Nikon scopes so far but came across the Truglo 4x32 TG8504BT at my LGS today and, at $70, I was intrigued. The fit and finish seem nice, it uses a mil-dot reticle, and has finger-adjustable elevation/windage knobs. So, what can you guys tell me about Truglo scopes? Does anyone have experience with this scope in particular? Thanks in advance, here's to hoping that "you get what you pay for" is inapplicable this time around!!

The majority of their products I've heard of, I've heard people rave about. Don't personally own one myself, but at $70, why not try and see. I'm sure you could always sell it for more if you don't like it. Or at least make your money back.

Truglo is junk.

I run a Nikon 1-4x M223 on my competition rifle, AR, and am rather happy with it. It is no S&B Short Dot but then it didn't cost more than my rent either. If you can, get one with the BDC600 reticle. I believe it is a Midway special reticle. I have the simple cross hair reticle and it works fine but the BDC may work better at longer range. I've only shot mine out to 425y. For the price it is not a bad little scope at all.

We are not a shoot off the bench group.

Thanks Robert. I'm leaning toward the P-223 3x32 mounted via a Burris AR-P.E.P.R. QD so I can retain use of my MBUIS. Thoughts/suggestions?

I have heard good things about the Burris mount. I have not seen the 3x M-223 but if it is like the rest of the line it should be a decent little scope.

I'll second that. If you're lucky enough to get one that holds zero, you'll still have a scope that is useless in low light.

Vortex Viper 1-4 is a great scope for about $500. I've heard a lot of good things about the burris tac 30, but never used one. Purchased a lightly used one the other day for $250.

I'll throw in a good word for the Burris P.E.P.R QD mount. It lacks some of the fit and finish of the more expensive QD mounts, but the rings hold well, it's affordable, and it returns to zero. I'm very happy with mine.

Burris PEPR looks good to me. Don't own one, but put one on a friend's AR and used it.
The new Leupold VX-1 (not the older VX-I) 2-7 muzzleloader scope might be a good one to look at.

Must be more bad experiences with TruGlo than I had thought. A couple buds of mine have been using 'em and have been raving. One's Dad just took a buck last year with one in Nebraska, said he loved it.

I've owned several tru-glo red dots and have never had an issue. I had one on a shotgun once and never gave me an ounce of trouble. I have one now on my S&W 22A and love it. Not to mention, there customer service and warranty is no joke. I bought a red dot off a guy on craigslist and it didn't work. I called them up, told them my problem and had a new one within a week.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I decided to go with a Nikon P-223 3x32 BDC Reticle paired with a Burris AR-P.E.P.R. QD and feel pretty comfortable with my decision. I'm still a little iffy on moving from my 1x red dot to a magnified optic in the first place though, so I hope the P-223 really does allow for quick close-range target acquisition. Perhaps I'll create a small write-up and put my thoughts/experiences down on paper after I've had some time with the new setup.

p.s. Funny enough, this journey resulted in me purchasing three different scopes; first, the Truglo 4x32 TG8504BT w/ cheap riser (LGS), then a Burris Timberline 4x20 w/ expensive rings (LGS), and now the Nikon P-223 w/ Burris QD mount (OpticsPlanet.com)! Luckily, I keep receipts!!

If the burris QR returns to zero, you could add an aimpoint or similar w/ QR in the future. If you get a chance, please let us know how the burris mount does.

I have a couple of Red Dots and a 3-9x32/40 (don't remember which now) Truglo products that have been great. No junk in my lot at least.

Just checked out the P-223 on the Nikon site. That thing is really short. Wonder if it will even fit in a 1-piece mount.

The optics quality on the truglo's are not very high in my opinion, and I have one sitting on the shelf now. I like the Burris 332, excellent optic, fixed 3 power with holdovers to 600 yards, and the reticle is usable even without battery power. The Nikon 223 is a good optic, as is the Burris 1-4.

This is quite the on-going ordeal! The P-223 (luckily) was backordered for 3-4weeks so I changed my order and have a brand-spankin'-new Nikon M-223 1-4x20mm w/ the BDC 600 reticle and Burris PEPR QD mount on the way. To top it all off, I'm looking into mounting a Burris FastFire II or III atop everything to give me the best of both worlds. Ladies & gents, I think we finally have a winner! Anyone have experience with this setup?
