I'm with the

"Depends (where you live, type of vehicle, etc.)"

if you're living in the city, I would think a ccw (or open carry) on your person would be better. If you are in the boonies with Sasquatch or in bear country ya, I would rather have a rifle on my person. & of course what type of vehicle you're sporting if you have a jeep & your doors are off and the tops off , I wouldn't leave a gun in it.

It seems to me that the arguments calling such behaviors irresponsible are getting dangerously close to that 'blaming the rape victim for being female/male' mentality.

You can't blame the victim for being male/female, but very often they would not have been a victim if they'd made some better choices. It may not be her fault she was raped in that dark alley, walking by herself at 2:30 AM in the not-so-good part of town all prettied up from a night at the club, but she would have been smart to avoid that place at that time under those circumstances.

Similarly, it's not your fault your truck was broken into and a gun stolen, but it could have been avoided if you'd not left the gun there in the first place in an area where car break-in's are as regular an occurance as hands on the clock lining up.

jrdolall,

Wow. I didn't realize advocating responsible gun ownership make me an anti. Ya know, because SOME people aren't responsible, it makes it worse for everyone. A tiny minority of gun-owners leave their guns within reach of children, bad things happen, and now we have more legislation making it ILLEGAL and a crime to not secure our guns in a safe. I would have just preferred avoiding the issue altogether.

Like Sam1911 said, I am just trying to weigh the risks and rewards. I pretty much agree spot on with what he said a few posts back. Different people and different arrangements have different risks/rewards.

I'll sum it up this way. There is not any defensive job I would rather do with a pistol than a rifle. Would I have time to deploy it? Maybe, PROBABLY NOT. But if I don't have it, I don't have the option at all.

Fixed that for ya :)

It seems that all that can be said, has been said, and the discourse is starting to go downhill. We're just regurgitating the same responses to different folks. For the most part, it sounds like people that live/work in the city avoid keeping firearms in their vehicle, or at least take precautions when they do. And those that live in more rural isolated parts of the world are more likely to keep a gun in the vehicle, but it makes more sense for them because the risk is lower and the potential utility is greater. So that is reassuring. For those in the first group that choose to do it because it gives them a sense of security (real or not) and/or because it isn't illegal and gives them "more options," if that's enough reason for them, more power to them. It doesn't sound like they will be changing their minds anytime soon.

Doesn't matter. If we are working from what is 'probable', we wouldn't carry guns at all.

All I'm saying is they don't call it a risk/reward ratio for nothing.

Anyone who does it would certainly have to really decide if they want to go to the trouble to train to use and secure a rifle. Like I stated before, I have a lifestyle where I may run out to the desert at any given time to shoot stuff. But if there ever arose a situation where I had to run and grab a gun, I want it to be a rifle. I have just hit the point where most of the time I want it with me.

One thing that tilted the scale was the explosion of pot farmers here. There have been HUGE pot busts in places I recreate, and if anything nasty ever happens, I think I would want to have more than my 1911.
