Ive been contemplating purchasing a trunk gun for my daily transport. Ultimately Id like a gun safe welded in the truck for safe, secure transport. I'm leaning towards a Benelli M-4. Does anyone have any recommendations for this setup? What is your defensive firearm of choice for your vehicle and how do you secure it?

And if I gave an officer consent to search the vehicle, and he could not access the gun safe, and I do not give him access what happens from there?

BTW hope its the right forum for this post-

I think I might put a Mosin Nagant in my trunk sometime pretty soon. Seems like a good place to keep it. If it gets stolen, I'm out of $100 (and that includes ammo). I would keep it in a blanket. I drive a subaru outback sedan, pretty low profile car that I doubt would get broken into if there was another flashier car around.

And if I gave an officer consent to search the vehicle, and he could not access the gun safe, and I do not give him access what happens from there?
Depending on the officer he might (A) detain you until he gets a warrant and a torch, destroys your safe and contents opening it, and then lets you go upon verifying that your now-charred shotgun isn't stolen or wanted in a crime, or (B) not worry about it.

OK, maybe that's a little extreme, but it's still better to tell him no to any search.

^A search warrant is unlikely unless there's some convincing evidence for a judge. "Lack of consent" is not convincing evidence.

Don't ever consent to a search. Either a cop has probable cause or the cop doesn't have probable cause. If the cop has probable cause, consent is unnecessary. If the cop does not have probable cause, then the cop has no business searching your car, and don't consent. It doesn't matter if you know nothing's illegal. Just don't consent.

Yugo 59 SKS,in trunk.
4th Amendment,do not give consent. You are a law abiding citizen. With no probable cause
,he has to get a judge to approve a search warrant.
If you are not in violation of your state firearms laws, the LEO is in deep trouble.

Since Colorado is a shall issue CCW state, I prefer a pistol, on my person.

This does provide the "opportunity" for an officer to be more upset if you get pulled over, but I can live with that.

What ever you do, if it's not the CCW, make sure it is either bolted in, or welded on, to the vehicle.

I'm not really a fan of telling the bad guy to "hold on, while I get my gun out of the trunk." :what:

Problem is some cops make up probable cause. Yes, I have first-hand experience in this department.

Cop claims I was swerving, I know I wasn't. His word against mine, I lose 99.9% of the time.

Only recourse is to hire a lawyer and go to court, who wants that hassle?

This is the problem with the system. If you get an LEO who respects your rights, everything is cool. Get one who doesn't, and you either consent to get searched or you will spend a bunch of $$ fighting the charges they trump up against you for not allowing them to search...

Again, don't consent to a search. The reasoning involves the issue of admissibility of evidence in later legal proceedings. That issue is beyond the scope of this thread. Keep it simple: don't consent.

I wouldn't today. I am much more versed in my rights than I was then. I was probably about 19 at the time and somewhat easily intimidated by the LEO.

Console Vault

Made specifically for select vehicle type. Fortunately one is a Dodge Ram 1500. Easy to install. Removed factory bolts from bottom console, slide vault in place, re-install bolts. Must lock to close it. Bolts are hidden. I feel very comfortable leaving my guns/other valuables in it, except of course while driving. :) Well worth the $289 price tag. I keep hoping they expand to other make/model vehicles, I would love to put one in my wife's Rav4.
