I have all but decided that I am getting either a Sig Sauer P6 or a P225. If anyone has either or both please share your overall experience with one or the other. The prices are as follows:

  • P225 w/heel magazine release
    [*]"Good" $329
    [*]"Very Good" $359
  • P6 w/standard thumb magazine release
    [*]"Very Good" $339

Both guns come with 1 magazine and the box. I'm kinda leaning toward the P225 but don't know if it's worth the extra $30 for "Very Good". I don't mind the Heel release so much other than the fact that grips may be harder to find. Would a P225 be more likely HP ready compared to the P6? Are the springs in a P225 Given the choice, which one would you go with and why?

uhhh, the way I'm reading your post, it's twenty bucks less for the P6 'very good' condition.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, it made sense in my head :) I was referring to the Price difference between the Two grades of P225. The P225 "Very Good" is $30 more than the "Good". The P6 is less than either but I have heard that some people have to have changes made to the springs and feed ramp on the P6.

the changes you are talking about are the mainspring...LE spec'd a stronger mainspring in the P6 and "some" P6 feed ramps have an angle which isn't great for HP feeding. the most visible difference is that the P6s have the notch cut into the hammer spur.

i bought two P6s for <$300/each (i "think" it was $249) and they both had holster wear...the hammer still bothers me.

i had the trigger tuned on one, they changed out the spring and it feels great...i had them blue the slide at the same time and it looks great too...but the hammer still bothers me

I picked up the P225 today. I love the way it feels and am more than pleased with the overall condition of the gun. The bluing on the slide shows holster wear on the edges and there is one small scratch on the frame but that is to be expected in a gun that was produced sometime near 1979. The internals are in like-new condition. I see no wear on the rails and the finish is slightly worn off of the slide ramp. The feed ramp is still blue. I compared it to a Sig P226 while I was at the shop and the triggers are similar but the P225 is much stiffer. I'll be ordering some new springs pronto.

Dude that looks pristine, 'holster wear' is nothing, that thing is brand new but carried a bit.

Has it even been shot?

Do you even need new springs?

I personally am starting to see the value of a heel-type release, it really is better overall than a button type except for fast changes.

The internals are like-new so it's pretty hard to see how this gun could have fired more than a few hundred rounds. The holster wear just adds character in my opinion and as long as I keep her cleaned and oiled rust shouldn't be an issue. I want to change the main spring to a lighter one like the commercial 225 has. I want to go with something around a 19-20# spring this one feels like a 26# spring. The magazine release used the same spring and should also benefit from a lighter rated spring. I can't wait to get her to the range soon.

The funny thing is that the barrel has definite marks from being fired, but the frame doesn't. What does Sig do to their aluminum that would result in that?

Again, beautiful gun, wring it out, double its round count in your first session, congratulations!

I was going to offer my opinion on which one to get, but looks like I'm too late, as usual. Congratulations on your "new" P225. Your experience seems to be the general rule for SIG European police turn-ins - carried a lot (holster wear) but shot very little (like-new internals).

The lack of any sign of wear on the rails is consistent with all of my older West German SIGs. I don't know if that is due to looser tolerances back then, or better and finer final finish. As a matter of fact the only SIG of mine that shows any rail wear is a recent German-manufacture P245 that has been shot the least.

I have a P6 and think it (and the P225) is the best feeling/handling gun SIG made, but then I have medium/small hands. It is also very accurate. I replaced my hammer spring with a Wolff 22 lb one. I think the P6 and police P225 came with a 28 lb spring while the commercial P225 had a 24 lb. I think you are going to really enjoy shooting your P225. :D

Thanks for your insight Wgsigs. I was comparing the 225 to a new 226 at the GS yesterday and loved the trigger pull on the 226. If it was a 24lb then I think you're right on the money with the 22lb one. I'm afraid that anything less may cause some light strikes. Also, with the heel release, I need to be careful not to underpower the release and they share the spring.
