I am not necessarily in need of cash, just feel I may have too much money in guns. I know that I am a low level compared to many but I have: 3-9mm-SR9c, PPQ navy, Sig P938; 38spl LCR; LCP (I love to carry and will not give up); SR1911 (will not give up); 22/45 that a had threaded (not giving up) and SR22 threaded. I have suppressors 22lr and a 45 that I also use for 9mm. For long guns I have an improved BCM AR15 and suppressor (not giving up), Ruger American 30 06, 10/22 TD threaded (not giving up) and Mossberg 500 (not giving up).

I may want to get rid of two guns, not in hurry. I am leaning towards the American Rifle because I don't use it much and hunting in OH is shotgun and maybe the P938-of far not super reliable but only have 400 rounds through or SR22 or decided between SR9c and PPQ.

How many guns do you have and feel is a reasonable number? What would you give up?

How many is a reasonable number is up to you. I feel it's a good idea to have backups in case something needs to go in for repairs. It's also a good idea to have different firearms for different purpose (i.e. I have my LCP which I carry all the time, M&P9C for when my clothes support it, XDm with a light attached next to my bed for first line of HD, and a couple shotguns in the safe for long gun HD).

If you're not strapped for cash, and your safe isn't full (or is full and you don't have any new guns that you want), I personally wouldn't sell any. However, if there are some that you just don't use anymore and don't see yourself using over other stuff in your safe, I don't think it would hurt.

That's just my opinion, anyway.

You can also make a "deal" with yourself that if you find a gun you'd like to buy, sell one to get it. This keeps them in perspective. Some guys will never sell any gun, ever. Some sell what they never shoot or just don't like for some reason. Whatever works for you is what you should do. Everybody has different needs and wants.

"if its time to bury your guns its time to dig them up" or something like that foolishness. but i think its a good idea to bury extra ones and not have all your eggs in one basket. plus its fun. i buried my beretta for a long time. dug it up and buried my glock. its like i have a new gun every now and then for free!

don't keep all your ammo in one basket either.

My gun safe problem is I store my ammo in there. I may get a locked metal cabinet for that and that would ron up space.

I appreciate the thoughts. I like the sell off one to get another idea. Have a feeling the 30 06 and the reloading dies might be number on, if it will sell.

You can solve your storage problem by buying another safe.

Never sell a gun. You will end up buying it again.

I rarely sell a gun but if you bought guns as an investment this is maybe a good time to sell some. I figure about 20 guns is the minimum BTW. That gives me the essentials and backups for the essentials. Plus it leaves room for a gun or two "just because".

The main reason I'll sell a gun is that I don't like it for some reason. If I sell guns I do like I almost always end up wishing I hadn't sold it.

The .30-06 isn't a useful gun for Ohio, so if you want to sell one, that'd be my pick as well. As far as sell one/buy one, that idea has merit. I had a number more guns than you've listed at one time and elected to sell a number to purchase fewer but better guns. I've NEVER regretted that decision and have enjoyed those better quality guns immensely over the years. I've never regretted selling a gun, contrary to many on this board, but I do normally try and invest the money either towards another gun or for some other type of shooting related expense so it doesn't get frittered away foolishly.

I would sell the Ruger American rifle because if as you say you can't use it to hunt with, then it's pretty much limited to being a range gun. With the pistols probably one of the 9mm.s; maybe the SIG P938.

I've never regretted a gun I've sold, only the ones I didn't buy. Whenever I've sold a gun, there's always another gun (or a scope, that happened once) in the deal, though I may get money back.

My philosophy is as follows. My desire for fire arms is more centered in hobby than individual purpose. As a hobby interest, I have an urge to try multiple combinations from various makers to experience different levels of performance.
To best facilitate this it is often most beneficial to use the extras to trade off for something different. I try to keep in mind that anything I trade off will not be the last ever made and if I decide i miss it, I can find and trade for another. Recent example, I traded off a sp101 and within a month had another one from a different trade. It takes a bit of patients waiting for the right trade, but the differing combinations I've been able to try for myself has increased by multiples.

In my opinion, if you don't need the cash, look for trades in gear, ammo, or other guns.

At this point I have reached the maximum $ in guns I feel comfortable with. I've been at this point for some time. I sell one to buy one now. Or in some cases sell 2 to buy 1 or sell 1 and buy 2. Its not a number thing but a $ thing.

I would sell alot of those pistols and buy more rifles. I like rifles. No use for a 30-06 where?

.30-06 not legal for deer hunting, our only large game, in Ohio. So unless it's in a Garand or other CMP legal rile to use in CMP shoots, a .30-06 just isn't a very useful rifle to own in Ohio other than as a range toy.

I'm sorry! How could anyone rule out a 30-06 for hunting? This country is getting crazy!

If I needed/wanted to sell one from that collection, I'd dump the .30-06 and get a varmint caliber, since you can hunt coyotes and such with one. Something like a .223 or .22-250 would be nice, or you could grab a .243 so you'd have longer range wind bucking and a nice deer rifle if you ever decide to go do that in another state.

If the P938 isn't reliable, I'd sell it, too. If you like it and want to try to get it reliable, then that's a good decision, too. Personally, I like the P239 more than the P938, so I'd swap it out.

Like many, the size and $ value of my collection is dependent on my income.
I have a couple of guns with sentimental value that would never be sold, but most I have real attachment to.
Most of them, if I saw something I wanted more and I could sell/trade something I already have to get it, I would do so.
That's not to say I won't buy anymore without selling one off, I probably will but for me, a full time student, it isn't often I have the available budget to it.

Of course if my income matched my wants, it would be an entirely different story. I'd look like Burt on Tremors if I had the $. lol

In my area all I really need...

Hunting:
.22 cal pellet rifle (squirrels) Benjamin Trail 1100 XL
.223 Rem (coyote, feral dog) AR-15 RRA Varmint w/ 20" SS bbl
.30-06 Sprg (deer, hog) Savage Axis w/ SS bbl

Home Defense:
12ga, TriStar Raptor ATAC
9mm Lug, Ruger SR9c

Carry:
9mm Lug, Ruger LC9

I once had quite a few more various calibers and all were very nice firearms. However, my financial situation changed drastically and I sold them all and downsized. I don't feel outgunned or undergunned.

My firearms aren't necessarily my "top choices" to own but they're all better than I'll ever be and will outlast me by a long-shot. I do very much prefer semi-auto vs. bolt but I can't complain about the Axis which replaced a very nice .30-06 BAR Gold Medallion.

I would really like a .458 SOCOM upper which could effectively replace the '06... but I'd REALLY need to get into reloading to afford shooting it. I would like a .22 LR but recently got fed up with poor availability and skyrocketing prices of ammo of all rimfire... and there's truly nothing around here requiring either .22 LR or WMR that a good pellet rifle and .223 Rem can't handle.

In my above list of what I own, I intentionally left off the Remington 597 WMR because I don't intend to keep it. Although it nicely fills what many would consider a "void" between the pellet rifle and .223 Rem... this area doesn't have any critters between a squirrel and coyote so what need does it fill... especially at 30 cents per round?

I also didn't include, in my list above, a Savage Axis in .223 Rem because I'll probably sell it since I have a nice AR in the same caliber and I do prefer semi-auto and I don't need the sub MOA accuracy anymore.

If I sell the .223 Rem Axis I'll probably use the money to help fund a .458 SOCOM upper and associated reloading gear... but will probably have to sell the '06 Axis too. That's okay because although I like the Axis bolt rifles I really do prefer semi-auto. Did I mention that I prefer semi-auto? After selling both the Axis bolt guns and 597 Rem I can afford the .458 SOCOM and basic reloading gear. That'll be a happy day.:)

Now that I've bungled your thread with my ramblings...:D Actually, I'm just sharing my personal thought processes RE my own firearm choices. Maybe it'll help with your decisions... maybe not.

EDIT: On the other hand... I do prefer to have a backup or two of certain calibers and the two Axis bolt guns very nicely serve that roll for the two ARs. Are you confused yet? I know I am. My very thin wallet will make my mind up for me though.:D

The is a lot of areas of the Midwest that do not allow rifle hunting. I grew up in Michigan and the southern third of the state only allows hunting with shotguns or muzzleloaders. Some states also allow rifles chambered for pistol cartridges. This is due to the land being very flat and containing the vast majority of the state's population. Rifles bullets have ranges measured in miles and the geography is such that there are no hills or trees to stop a bullet that misses the intended target. This the the dividing line in Michigan: HT-RF-Zones2_416360_7.png

On the topic, if you don't regularly use a gun and you have lost interest in it, I see no reason not to sell it. Sell it to fund another gun that interests you or fund another interest / hobby. Life is short and I see no reason to hold onto possessions that I don't use.

I'd keep the 06, one never knows when he'll need a thumper, besides some of the other trendy stuff may go quicker at less of a loss.
