TRYING TO GET AN IDEA WHAT TO ASK

I've reached point at almost 82 that arthritis in my hands is so being can hardly hold, much less shoot/load/maintain my BP pistols: have an 1858 Remington and two 1860 Colts; all Pietta; all .44; all Goonerized; several extra cylinders for each; .45LC for Rem & one of the '60's; hundreds of Remington #10 caps; boxes of .45LC; lots of black powder, Pyrodex-loose and pellets; couple hundred balls; hundreds of homemade 1\8" wads; lot of other BP paraphernalia, including a nice homemade loading stand.
Wonder the best way to try and sell everything: probably would prefer everything together for simplicity, but feel perhaps individually would be better? Pistols separate from rest; powder and balls together, perhaps?
Really looking for some advice, perhaps, from others who have done similar!!
Thanks !

Hey Judgejohnmd !!! So sorry to here you gotta stop shooting but with "Arthur" hanging around, I understand! Good luck with the revolvers and fixins, I hope you get what you need to get!!
Thank you sir!!

Mike

That's too bad. The caps and powder may not be legal to sell, other than face-to-face. Not sure about the cartridges, and don't really know about the caps and powder. If one is not asking too high of a price, the pistols should sell fast. Good luck!

Hi judgejohnmd,
Sorry, I know getting older is a bummer!
Without pictures, condition and function descriptions it is hard to give you a value.

I have bought and sold in many ways.
All have their pros and their cons!

1. The EASIEST for the seller is through a bricks and mortar auction house that puts their auctions on Proxibid so that the items have more exposure than just the walkin local clientele. The auction house does all the pictures, copy and usually suggests a high and a low expected bid based on their knowledge (make sure they have regular firearms auctions and don't just throw a couple of guns in with the furniture) of the firearms market. I have used Cowan's Auctions here in Cincinnati exclusively to sell about 30+ guns over the last decade and have been pleased with the results. The DOWNSIDE of this is that, since they do all the work, they expect to get something out of it. When I started using them, the seller's premium was 10% but the last time I got nicked for 18% of the final bid amount. They also charge a buyer's premium which was 20% for the last two handguns I bought on Proxiibid from two other auction houses. The draw back to the latter is that a bidder keeps that in mind when considering the maximum amount they want to bid. If they have $120 to spend, they will only bid $100 knowing the 20% premium will be charged to their card along with the winning bid amount. How much you realize from the sale depends of course on how many folks compete for each item. The Auction House handles all the shipping of your stuff to the winners and writes you a nice big check!!!

2. GunBroker, Auction Arms, Armslist, Guns International and Guns America are online auction houses which will also get your items shown to a wide range of buyers. I have bought from all of these over the years but have only sold on GunBroker. When I sold several Lugers, P-38s and WWII stuff about 12 years ago on GB, I had to teach myself HTML to write the code for the copy and take and upload all my own pictures. GB took 10% if I remember correctly but I did all the work posting each item. I had to arrange with a local gunshop to send the firearms to the buyer's FFL holder as well. You can either do an auction or a fixed price or a combination auction and Buy Now on GB. If you are not sure of the value of your items, you can use GB's "Advanced Search" option. select "Completed Auctions" and put in one of the items as a search term. You will get many hits of listings over the last several months. Note that many of them will be ended without a sale so the person started their initial bid too high. The ones marked "Sold" give you an idea what people will pay for your item. Look at the original listing to see if their item was better or worse than yours and what it included. A trick to get bidders interested is to set a low starting bid but have a reserve price set at what you think you should get. Once bidders start putting in bids, they start considering the item theirs and get annoyed when other bidders try to take it from them. I can't tell you how many times I paid way too much for something at 1am dueling the competition.

3. Find a local gunstore who lists on GB or another online auction and ask them to post your item on consignment for you. They will charge you either a flat rate or a percentage of the final bid for doing all the work. They also may want to buy your item themselves but remember, they will want to make a profit when they sell it (Ever Watch Pawnstars?) so you will still not get top price from them but its quick and easy.

4. Since you have been a member here since 2014, I assume you are allowed to use our "Buy, Sell and Trade" forum: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?forums/buy-sell-and-trade-black-powder-firearms-and-acc.71/ Instructions for posting your sales are at the top, second just below the "Scammer" information. While your audience there is not the whole internet, it is made up of people who are interested in what you are selling. If you take your items to a gun shop and ask them what they will pay you for them, you can probably figure they would ask about 20% more for them when they were sitting in their case and get an idea of their value or you can use GB "Advanced Search" as in #2 above. Depending on your State's and City's laws as well as those in the buyer's location, you may have to ship even C&B revolvers through FFL holders. Shipping the conversion cylinders separately is usually allowed as they are considered parts but check your local rules. Remember to include fees, shipping and handling costs in you post.
Good Luck with your sales!
David

Here is just one man's opinion, worth less than you paid for it -
You are likely to net more cash selling pieces individually, but is it worth the effort and time?
It very well may be.
It's been at least 5 years since I was really in the market as a buyer of a random lot but I have bought out several folks collections/ kits/lots/ what have you.
So take this with a grain of salt and just consider the info for what it is -
When I was in accumulation mode, I'd add up the "stuff" in sort of a rule of thumb manner somethnig like this -
$200/ revolver
$200/ conversion cylinder
something extra for being goonerized but not sure how much that adds honestly. Street value is likely less than you paid. Let's say $50 each maybe more, maybe less. Not sure.
Second hand market Balls? $5/ 100
Caps $2/ 100
Powder, wads, and paraphernalia? maybe add nothing, but that depends. Maybe just use that for a rounding factor on the lot.
Pyrodex? nota - Could be worth nothing depending on storage and I wouldn't use it.
Now I'm sure the value has gone up like everything in the last couple years, so some correction factor for inflation, but 5 years ago based on not very much info I likely would have offered $900-$1000 for what it sounds like you have if I was interested.

as others have stated, more details really required to nail anything down, and I'm actually not interested, just tying to help.

I would post it on here. Folks here know what you have and what it’s worth. Not likely to lowball you and try to hit a homerun at your expense. Also, and especially so here, the small bits that would not add value in many situations will add value here because again, people know what the things are and what they are for.

Post the guns here. Goon has a good rep and there may be interest. Post the powder and caps on local classifieds or shooting club. Caps should go very quick at $.05-$.10 per these days.

Can you mail caps and powder, or UPS of FEDX them?

Don’t ship Powder or Primers or Caps… Keep it local FtF. But as for the C&B guns!!! post and see! make sure you let us know about your listing. We don’t always go to the BP classifies

I thought anybody can sell buy Cap&ball ?? no
The revolvers, without the conversion cylinders, are not classified as "firearms" by the ATF but many STATES now classify them in laws right along with cartridge guns. "If it goes bang!" The rules of the State of the shipper and of the buyer and the shipping entity all have to be considered. If a sale between states with Draconian laws was essential, it could be done through FFL holders at either one or both ends! The caps and the power would have to go through some business that shipped Hazardous Materials of their own regularly which would probably be prohibitively expensive.

What Ephraim Kibbey suggested. OK to sell separately but if conversion cylinder and revolver are sold together, some states frown on it. Also, check with your shipper before sending the powder and caps. Their rules may vary. Local sale is easiest.

Last, sorry to learn about your infirmities. That sucks.

To answer the OP:

Selling as 1 Lot may take longer and net you less $$$$.

I would list them individually and offer a discount on multiples or total lot sale.
Price is what makes it sell. Be fair and it will be fast and easy.

Caps and powder can be more difficult and must be face to face.

I had a carton of caps, went to local gun store and he was ecstatic to buy them.

Apparently I've not been on enough to qualify for listing here: am going to try and sell locally(Maryland) to avoid hazardous shipping issues: really appreciate the responses!

it took me only 1-2 week to qualify to sell here. But I’m a social butterfly!

Million Dollar Question… what were you trying to sell??? we are dieing to know

edit: sorry, just reread the top

Well, I'd put the Goon pistols up for sale here, as more would realize/understand their extra value. Selling them locally, or on consignment in a gun store, I don't think any buyers would "get it". They would probably choose a brand new Uberti or Pietta over a "used" pistol that "some gunsmith" worked on.
