It looks like I'll be moving to Tucson in a few weeks. Is there anyone from that area that can give me info on places to buy guns and ammo and places to shoot? How is open carry there?

Places all over. Shooting areas can be found on public lands in the area, otherwise there are formal ranges, some cheaper or more expensive than others. OC is not overly common from what i've seen in six months here, but I have seen people carrying openly around town, no big deal. Haven't checked out any local gun shops really, but I've seen them around.

Tucson is one of the more liberal places in Arizona, but you are comparing it to Arizona not NY. They had some local gun laws about carrying in parks that the state had to pass some other laws to mitigate. Nice place though just watch your pets. There are no stray cats in Tucson, coyotes got them all.

AZ is an open carry state, and it's one of the few states where you can CC without a permit, though if you don't have a permit there are restrictions on where you can carry that do not apply to those who have permits. Having lived in Phoenix, which is just down the road from Tucson, I STRONGLY recommend you CC.

Tucson, Az

Murphy's Guns, Fort Lowell and Columbus is the best place to buy in Tucson. I actually live here and have for 27 years.

Definately gun friendly.

Welcome to Tucson, you will love it. Besides Murphys there is diamond Back located near Kold and Broadway. It is a police LE type gun shop. There is a sportsman warehouse on the NW side of town.

There are several good places to shoot besides the wide open spaces. Pima county runs a very nice range out near the fairgrounds. It has 30 shooting lanes and about half are out to 200 yards, and the other half are out to 50 yds, target stations at 10,15, 25 and 50 yards. 30 miles west of Tucson is Three Points run by the Tucson Rifle Club with ranges out to 1000 yards, and numerous match opportunities. There is an indoor pisto range located on 29th street not too far from DMAFB.

Can't talk with much authority about open carry--Pima County is OK, I don't hng out too much in town, so all I can say is that it seems legal there.

If you don't mind traveling Ben Avery is located north of Phoenix --one of the top ranges in the US. I know there is a lot I have not mentioned, but I'm sure others will add more.

Have a safe trip here.

Marksman Pistol Institute ran both indoor ranges, one on 29th, and another on Flowing Wells and Prince when I lived there, and I worked at the Prince range when it was owned by Jensens. Also a public range tucked away in Tucson Mountain Park, rather nice place. I worked at Tucson Rifle Club out past Three Points, an awesome place - the range is a full mile across, 7 different outdoor ranges, including the 1000 yard range. BUT, you must be a member to use the ones other than the 100 yard public and 500 meter silouhette ranges.
Murphys is nice, West o The Pecos used to be a good little gun shop, but it's been a while.
AZ has Consitutional Carry, but if you want to avoid the Brady background phone call, (takes 5 minutes), and would like to carry while NOT drinking in a resteraunt that serves alcohol and isn't posted, (Olive Garden comes to mind), get your AZ permit, very easy to do. No magazine limits, amo restriction, NFA friendly, no AWB, actually, not many restrictions at all firearm wise, and getting better every year. :) C'mon down - I lived in Tucson for 40 years, BTW, since I was hatched.

+1 on Murphys. Just don't go at lunch time, the parking is overflowing and it is elbow to elbow inside. That's how popular it is. 2nd Ammendment Sports on Pima is getting better but it still will never be as good as the old Jensens store. Several other stores plus a Sportsmans Warehouse. Lots of shooting ranges and public lands.

Murphy's is at Ft. Lowell and country club, not Columbus, but is still amazing. West of the Pecos is now The Armory and I haven't been in there yet, Second Amendment has an ok selection but their prices are ridiculous. Diamondback is good if you are looking for "tactical" stuff. Marksman, at least the one on 29th is more of an indoor range that also sells guns. I work there part time, so if you stop by on a saturday or sunday say hi.

I love Tucson and AZ in general. That being said Tucson is the place I've felt closest to having to shoot someone and it happened twice.
Late 80's

Congratulations on moving to Tucson and welcome, not as hot as Phoenix but we did hit 80 today, depending on which side of town you move you will have different areas to desert shoot , like someone else posted we also have several pay as you go indoor and open ranges, you can also start hitting all the gunshows that we have throughout the year, we had one this weekend and there's another one coming up next weekend.
Post once you get here and we'll help you navigate the town.

We now have constitutional carry, besides open carry you can also conceal carry without a license as long as you are not legally prohibited (felon, rights taken away, etc.), check out and join Az Citizens Defense League at www.azcdl.org , we are the ones getting the proper gun laws passed.

Last time I was there I went into the Armory, ok small shop, all new inventory at almost internet prices. I'll be a little surprised if they last at that rate, got to sell tons of ammo and accessories if you're not making overhead on the guns. Murphy's is about the best store since Jensens closed. I also like Frontier on Grant just east of Country Club. Small shop but he's usually got a few interesting guns, all used for the most part. If you're looking for new go to 2nd Amendment or out to Sportmans Warehouse in Marana (off I-10 at Ina or Orange Grove, can't remember which). Cash Box pawn on the south side is ok too, saw a Parker 12 gauge last time I was in there, but waaaay too much $$$ for me - but all Parkers tend to be that way :D

There are several ranges around town, a quick google will show you where to find them. I used to shoot at Reddington Pass years ago, no idea if that's still possible or not. I also used to shoot out northwest of Catalina, but I don't think you can do that anymore. State Trust land is not open to shooting anymore as far as I know. LEO's didn't bug responsible shooters when I lived there, probably still the case. Find a nice dry stream and shoot into the opposite bank, no houses near by, and pick up a bunch of trash before you shoot - odds are no one will hassle you.

Thbbbpt! :) Go Wildcats!

Sorry to hear West of the Pecos is gone, Dave who worked out there until he passed on was actually at my wedding, great guy. I'll drop by the new store next time I come through.

Thanks for all the replies and info. The weather will be quite a change, as I've spent the last five years in Tacoma. It was 50 today, and the warmest it's been this month.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Cashbox. Very good selection of guns, and a very good supply of reloading components. Right outside the base. Also Slash K for reloading stuff too, pretty alright cast bullets.

Hope it will be as nice in a couple of year when I plan to move there. Hope the job market will be good too.

Looking forward to getting a suppressor and I have a GSG5 and a Draco AK begging to short barred.

Open carry is the law of the state.
Has been since 14 Feb 1912.
You also do not need a permit to carry concealed. Even the Democrats in Tucson can't change that!!

Keep in mind that Tucson is the hotbed of Communism in the state.
Tucson spawned Former Governor and current HS Secretary Krappy Nappy. The only thing that keeps the southern Reds from taking over are all the "evil" black rifles in Phoenix!!

Other than that, Tuscon is an OK place...scratch that, Tucson is a hole!!

methinks all them outastaters up in phoenix brought some of their cool aid :neener::D:D:D:D

Beware of silly intrastate rivalries J_McLeod, they bring out the worst! :D

Local politicians in Tucson are among the dumbest I've ever seen... Remember that guy who Barbara Walters interviewed on a national program, he was a small time county tax assessor, drinking a Budweiser during the interview? Yep, Alan Lang, Pima County assessor for a while. Classy with a capital K! :D 'Course up in Phoenix, you got Terry Goddard :barf:....

Good evil black rifle stuff? Look up GG&G down south of the city, by Davis Monthan AFB and I-10, can't remember exactly where they were..

Murphy's has the best selection, and the folks are friendly.

I really like Thunderstik Trading Co over on speedway/jefferson for reloading stuff though. Super nice folks.

As far as the Marksman indoor ranges go, I think the guys at the Prince location are pretty friendly but the time I was at the location on 29th they were pretty much jerks. I've heard the same from others.

Slash K gives me a strange kind of feeling... you'll see if you go!!!

Slash K

Just my nickel. I have lived in Tucson 41 years now. Slash K are good people and set me up with my first Dillon. The gentleman that owns the store (sorry drawing a blank on his name) on several occasions was willing to warranty some Dillon parts on the spot then send mine in for replacement so I could get back to loading. Solid people.

If you shoot lead there in house bullets are solid. I use them for 45/70, shoot great and no leading.

I shoot at the Marksman on 29th somewhat regularly. Other then one guy getting excited about me getting my brass. Never had an issue.

Can't say enough about Murphy's. Most of the gun's I buy local I get from them. Dave, Carey, Chuck, and Tom are all solid guys and very knowledgeable.

Just my .02.

Dan...
