Hi 'Tuner,

I don't want to start a debate on the relative merit of parts replacement, but I suppose that may be inevitable with this thread.

I've got a Kimber Custom CDP and a Kimber Stainless TLE II, and at some point I want to replace the more important [MIM] parts with "higher quality" components. I was generally looking at Ed Brown parts (regular and Hardcore), but I also saw some good comments somewhere about STI parts.

I started a non-inclusive list of parts that I expect to replace, either now or later, and I was interested in hearing your suggestions for which parts, by which manufacturers.

Here's the list:

Extractor
Ejector
Hammer
Sear
Disconnector
Trigger
Hammer strut
Grip safety
Slide stop
Firing pin
Firing pin stop

Thanks,
Brad

Being Tuners long lost bro' and generally on the same page............here gos;

Extractor - Ed Brown Hardcore or Wilson Bullet Proof - both are barstock steel.
Ejector - Colt factory - I've also used Brown & Wilson.
Hammer - Ed Brown Barstock Hardcore hammer. I've also used Wilsons Deluxe Commander Hammer & their Ultra Light Hammer. All are barstock steel. See a pattern here?
Sear - Nowlin Pro Match, has a remarkable fit to the Brown hammer above & the disconnect below. I've also used the Wilson Combat - very good sear.
Disconnect - Briley
Trigger - Tuners not given me his take on those, as we usually talk steel. I prefer the Nowlin Lightweight, but have used the McComick lightweight. If you don't want the over travel screw, I've used EGW's E-Trigger with great results.
Hammer strut - Colt factory
Grip Safety - A beavertail I take it? I've used Brown & Wilson, both are quality solid made.
Slide stop - Wilson Bullet Proof. I've got a Brown Hardcore SS on one of my duty guns, and its a good one. Its checkered instead of serrated.
F/Pin stop - Colt factory or Wilson Bullet Proof
Firing pin - any good quality steel made or Wilson Bullet Proof or Brown Hardcore.

I build 1911's for L.E. personel, so I'm very picky on what parts go into them. I don't think anyone should settle for anything less..........

Issues beyond quality

On the grip safety in particular there are issues of fitting your hand and fitting your gun. If you want to fit the grip safety yourself then the various jigs become a consideration. For my money the high grip consideration implies a balance of grip safety, mainspring housing, safety including size and height/angle and front strap fit and finish.

There are parts of equal quality that are easier to fit or feel differently in the hand.

Part of the point is to get a gun that fits your hand and so that the thumb safety falls where you want it both on and off.

Might then ask which grip safety of good quality gives the highest grip or not too high a grip or ....... and which safety has the biggest or not too big extension and so it goes.

I liked the 8 bells three trimes of day while I was in the Navy. 0800.1600,2400 (Or 0000) and got used to that time without any problems. We ate at 0700, 1200, 1800, 2300, and 0330 while operating off the coast of Korea. 5 meals a day during flight quarters.
