Turkey loads

Im no expert, but do live in turkey country. There seems to have been a good hatch this year. Ive seen several 2 and 3 hen groups foraging for berrys and following up cattle.
I use a mixture of half 4 and half 6 shot. The shot load should equal the powder load. I use an over the powder wad and another over the shot card.. My powder is Goex XX
In the spring season, I walk along country roads and trails late in the evening listening for the gobble. That is in the area where he will roost. Up early next morning. Dark out. U go to where I heard him gobble the evening before, make a sharp noise and listen for his gobble. he will gobble. Just walk toward his call and repeat the noise. I clap my hands together. and move closer. I have got close enough yo see him on a limb.Wait till he jumps off the roost and shoot him. Hope that helps

So would 90Grs. BP(or RS Select(What I Use) and 1-1/4 Oz. of #4 & #6's be good?

Do you Mix the Shot or Layer #4 over #6 ? I'd Most Likely use an Over Powder Card then a Felt Wad then Shot followed with OS Card of Milk Carton (Waxed) with corn meal(wholegrain) as buffer for shot! I might aslo use a Cardstcok Paper cup over the OPW

But thank you!

Caywood wrote a pretty well thought out article about the subject..and since he makes a pretty nice smoothy, he probly has shot a few.

FWIW, I did have a little trouble seating the shot colum by using his loading method... So I just poored my shot and buffer all the way down the barrel..(this will make sense if you read his article) I use No.6 shot since that is what I have. I have been known to drop 4 or 5 #4buck balls down on top of the shot colum just for good measure.

There was a picture on the forums a couple years ago that showed what happens to the shot colum if an over-powder wad is heavier than the shot pieces,....it looked like a big mushroom with the heavy fiber wad overtaking the shot colum and smashing the rear and scattering the shot as it traveled forward through the shot colum.

Hello freedom475!

I read the Story in caywoods link, it was very interesting, Thanks for posting it.

However, beg to differ on one point,The cornmeal buffer, where he stated "don't use straight cornmeal, but Corn Muffin mix. I think that would refer or pertain to Quaker(or any brand that is "degermenated" (NO Natural oils)

I Use Indian Head(Yellow) stone ground whole grain which has all the Natural oils(Fats) in it that the corn had(Corn OIL) and will Protect shot & Barrel on the way out! it Greases that Barrel too!

Actually, there are no fats added to the corn muffin mix for they would go rancid over time due to shelf storage in the market..., but there are sugars. Using Jiffy brand corn muffin mix, this actually works, as I have seen it tested on a pattern board, and it did visibly improve the pattern density. I doubt it "buffers" the shot because if a little vibration will cause the shot to mix with the dry muffin mix, then a lot of compression from firing of the load should (I believe) force the muffin mix out into the spaces between the shot pellets, and not prevent shot contact. I think it works due to the sugar.

I think the heat of the detonation, or merely the compression, causes the shot to adhere to the sugar in the mix, and thus exits the barrel in a "solid" mass for split second before air friction causes the pellets to break apart, so yields a better shot pattern.

That's my theory and I'm "sticking" to it.

Get it? Sticking to it?? :D

Hey there LD!

I haven't tried the Jiffy CM Mix yet in Black Powder Loads..But in a Smokeless
3 3/4-1 1/4 #6X#8 Duplex Heavy Load One shell had No Cornmeal(Indian Head)
which I fired at Pattern Target 30Yds away..the next shell Had Cornmeal as Buffer
at same distance Hull was a Rem. Wad-SP12 20.0Gr Hi Skor 700X Hastings Compensator .660 Const. Shell with CM had solid 6" core at center ...So dense a Hummingbird couldn't escape (Not I wouldn't shoot a Humminbird anyway) But You get the picture.

Indian Head Stone Ground CM is Whole grain corn all the Natural fats/oils

I Plan to Use the Paper Shotcups made from 67# Cardstock w/ 1 OS card on Powder,1 1/8" felt then anotheros card under Shot cup then OS card(.030) with 80Gr. RS "Select" & 1 -1/4oz.#4X#6 Try Patterning then Head to the Woods in Fall

Mario

P.S. The Indian Head CM would also go rancid if left on store shelf, might get bugs too...seen that happen at Natural food stores
