To the OP

EDIT: Oh see that it is in Maryland. yeah probably 21 for handguns. Here in Virginia it is actually 18. Most people don't seem to know that.

I went with the G19 and love it... recoil isn't bad at all and the size is perfect. I can honestly say it is the best feeling handgun I have ever had my hands on when it comes to polymer at least. A lot of people tell you horror stories about how BAD the Glock is but seriously pay them no mind... Pick one up, GRIP IT HIGH, and play around with it a little... it should feel fine... besides if it is your first gun you won't have much to base its "horrible" grip angle on and more than likely you won't notice a thing... it is what? 2 degrees different? It really isn't that different feeling than any other gun I have ever held. It actually points better for me than the others.

Thanks for all the replies concerning GLOCKS :)

My main concern was that the G19 would give less accuracy and slightly more recoil than the G17, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

All you other people.......I said this would be my FIRST purchase. I will own 1911s, berettas, all that other stuff down the line, as I plan on collecting. But I do love me some glocks :-D

My first 2 shots in 2 years(from a handgun) out of my glock 19 were in the 10 ring at 25 yards, the next 2 were in the 9, the following 11 were in the 8 ring then after shooting a while my grip started making my shots go in a perfect 45 degree angle towards the bottom left corner but they still stayed in a pretty tight group it was obviously my 2 year break showing badly... first time EVER shooting a glock too... If you need a gun with better accuracy than that at 25 yards you need a rifle anyway.

The accuracy issues definitely weren't the gun's fault so the G19 definitely doesn't suffer from accuracy problems. This being your first gun you more than likely don't reload so the whole no lead issue shouldn't be a problem either. I want to get a suppressor eventually so that is the only reason I will be getting a new barrel... the stock one is more than enough to drill a bullseye out to 25 yards(probably more I didn't try it).

For the record this is a NEW G19 just made April 3rd so yeah... just to clear that up if my post made it look like an old gun.

You might also consider a 34 or 17L if you're not considering it for a concealed carry piece (though it can be done). The longer sight radius and lighter trigger make them slighly easier to shoot. If you can shoot one Glock 9mm, you can shoot any of them.

I know so many people that have gotten excited about getting their first gun only to buy a large framed gun. They love it, they shoot it then they decide to carry it. That's when they realize that they need another gun. If you are looking for an all-purpose work horse then a Glock 19 will fit the bill for home defense, car-gun and concealed carry. Later you can decide it you want a backup or mousegun for summer carry and a 1911 or 357 Sig bad boy full sized gun for the sheer firepower.

Why not just go out and rent all the Glock models that interest you.
See which one(s) you shoot best.
Then buy one of those.

Concealed carry is not a factor for me since I live in the great state of marylandistan. If I don't lose accuracy or gain recoil with the 19'over the 17, I'm going with the 19. Thx for the help everyone.

Get a 23. If you have not noticed, 9mm ammo is about impossible to find right now. Then you can get yourself a 9mm conversion barrel for about $100. Then down the road you can get a .357 sig barrel.

If you get the 19, you can't get a conversion barrel for .40, or .357 sig. If you get the 23 your options open up, and your chances of finding .40 ammo goes up as well.

G19 is the best all around Glock 9mm IMO. The differences between it and the 17 (or 26 for that matter) only count if you need to put it in a specific sized box. No practical difference in accuracy or recoil between the 17 and 19. $579 sounds like a fair (not a bargain) price.

But I do love me some glocks :-D

How do you knw this if you've never owened one, or anything else for that matter? There are many great guns out there from many manufacturers. Try as many as you can before you decide. Can't help you with the Glock thing. They just don't point right for me.

if I had to pick for you, I would pick the glock 21. Why? Cause its a 45, and its a glock.
Yes, 9's are great, but you can't find one. So, your choices are limited. Seriously for those prices I would order online...Brand new glocks in GA are floating around 550.
Or you can get a glock 38 which is the GAP version, and this will be good because the stores will actually have your ammo, and im pretty sure people don't buy those often.
My choices were made because of your stated availability. Good luck!

I know this because I've shot four different glocks, probably to the tune of about 600 rds total over the last two years. I just haven't fired a G19.

If I could close the thread I would, it seems to be making people angry that I might like a Glock, lol. If I don't lose accuracy or gain muzzle flip with the G19 over the G17, G19 it is, and I think this has been established. Thanks everybody for the replies I really appreciate it. Going to purchase it tomorrow, and then wait the long 8 days till I can pick it up. Doesn't maryland suck?

hehe yeah it took me 3 days to get mine and that had nothing to do with the wait... I paid for it monday, was shipped tuesday morning, and I got it wednesday at 3ish... The only reason I had to wait was because I ordered it online. If I got it in person from a gun shop it would take around 10 minutes. I am one state over too lol.

Get a Glock 19, its the best overall Glock, if not the best autoloader of all. It's the do it all Glock:

Concealable-yes much better than the 17 and for some, just as good as a 26!

Reliable-yes
High cap-y
Good performance/draw/recoil/accuracy-y

I went for the 23 so I could have the same gun with a stronger round.

The 19 deos recoil slightly more than the 17 but 9mm recoil is still in "girly" range. Don't worry about it.

I'd recommend the 23 as well. Ammo is available sometimes, bigger round, still hi-cap, same frame/slide/size. The 23 can be converted to .357sig with just a Glock barrel change. And can also be converted to a 9mm (g19) with an aftermarket 9mm barrel, extractor, magazines. I wouldn't convert a 23 to a 19, costs nearly as much as another Glock. But to go back and forth between .357 sig and .40 for the price of a stock Glock barrel is nice.

It's amazing to me the responses ppl give to such a simple, straight-forward question. Help me choose a glock! Where did he lose some of you? Was it.."Help me choose..." and then you're off on your own tangent? "I'd pick a XD"...
To me, the young man has made a wise choice going for Glock. Reliable, affordable, accurate and holds it's value. I owned a G17, and found it to be incredibly accurate and never had a FTF/FTE. Good luck with your decision and skip over the non-helpfuls.

All I can say to that is... Go with the Smith & Wesson M&P. It's what a Glock would be if they were still innovating. And, you get a lifetime warranty to boot.

I have never heard of Glock not fixing things even after the warrenty is up... I wanted a M&P but they are nowhere to be found right now and when my glock came in at $200+ cheaper I had to go that route. It definitely isn't bad at all though I love it. I fail to see a reason NOT to own at least one Glock... Why on earth would you need a reason to own another gun? I thought it was a given...
