Happy Birthday!! First handgun would be a S&W 686+ 4in. or Glock 17 or 22! However, you want a 1911 for possible IPSC/IDPA. Those are two different animals. Anthing goes in IPSC, you will see alot of race guns, there are more restictions in IDPA. IDPA is geared more to defensive/CCW/Law Enforcement style of shooting. Kimber Pro Carry's come to mind; ambi-safety,4in. barrel, full size grips. Something like that you could do both, competitive shooting and concealed carry.

Semper Fi!!

I'd recommend a .22. Cheap shooting. My 21st birthday present was a Ruger Mk.II. Already had a G23 and a Ruger SP-101 at the time.

I guess you could also get something like a 1911 with a .22 conversion upper.

Thanks y'all.

I'm aware there's different gun guidelines for IDPA and IPSC... but my team shoots both, and even though my personal preference is for IDPA, the local IDPA club isn't as much fun to shoot with as the IPSC club.

In fact, you see more texas stars and unrealistic scenarios there than in the IPSC matches at the same place.

My other pistols are a Beretta 92FS (after a couple incidents involving multiple hits on a popper before it went down, I can't trust the 9mil competitively, I don't like the DA first shot, and its huge for carry) and an XD-45 (better caliber and grip shape, but a double stack .45 would be a pain to conceal on my 5'10'' 150lb frame).

As it stands I shoot matches with the .45 and use the 9mil for cheaper practice or as a match day loaner for other cadets who don't have their own guns with them.

Given the way ammo keeps going up, I'm probably going to convert an AR15 and a pistol to .22 in the near future.

Update:

I got a PT1911. Carry permit paperwork is pending right now. The Taurus has about 250 rounds (1 range trip &1 IDPA match) through it already with no malfunctions, despite having issues with FTEject snap caps during dry practice--when hand cycling, the slide needs to be racked briskly for reliable ejection.

I've got a leather holster for it that will work well for concealed carry as soon as the paperwork goes through.

If you're looking for a lower $ 1911, I recommend Rock River or a used (maybe even new) Springfield GI. I owned the latter (found for $400 used), and it was a great gun.

EDIT: Oops - missed OP's last post :p Sounds like a good purchase - welcome to the club :D

Of the many 1911s that I have owned, the two very best were my:

1) Colt Series 70 reissue (stainless steel)
2) Kimber Custom Classic Target (carbon steel)

These two 1911s were excellent, accurate, and 100% reliable. Their cost was about the range of which you are thinking.

I have recently been reviewing the Springfield's 1911s. They look like mighty nice pistols as well, but I have never owned one, and I have never fired one.

CZ 75 with the Kadet .22 conversion slide as well.

It'll cost you, in all if you look around, $600. Cheaper if you get a good deal on a used CZ.

At $1,100 it is a bit out of your price range but I have to mention the Sig P220 Match with the SAO trigger. I did my homework first then went out and got one, can't imagine a better gun for the price. It shoots very accurately, and is very reliable. If you have the opportunity find someone who will let you put a few rounds down range with theirs.
