Turns out, Velocitor beats Wolf Match Target

Took my 10/22 to the range yesterday. Found out something interesting. Where I thought that the Wolf Match Target was going to be the more accurate round, . . . at 100 yards, it gave a 3" spread. The Velocitors were getting 1".

The only thing that was slightly fun was that I could see the bullet arching to the target [in the scope's field of view].

If I had a 10/22 that was shooting MOA with any brand, I would hurry to buy a lifetime supply of that brand and lot number.

I have read that the .22 BPCR shooters favor one or another high velocity load. At 200 yards, the reduced windage is more important than 50 yard grouping.

Wolf .22 ammunition is the same as SK Jagd, made in Germany by a wing of the Nammo/Lapua combine. It shares nothing but a brand name with the steel cased Russian centerfire ammo.

the wolf mt does just over an inch at 100yds out of my cz. i was shooting lapua center x today at 50yds and getting .25" groups consistently.

Definitely not stock. It has volquartzen trigger and hammer. 16" bull barrel. Stock free floats the barrel completely.

The scope is its week point. Just a 6-24x40 BSA.

It really is. . . . . which was why I was VERY surprised at the groupings at 100yrds. Again, it did fair at 50. I'm just going to have to have the CCI Velocitor as my #1 round for this rifle. Fortunately, I have a fair quantity of it.

i'll have to try out the velocitor. shot some cci standard velocity today as i had heard good things about it. nothing to write home about from my gun. the remington golden bullets do just as well from my two best shooting .22s

My son and I have spent a bunch of time trying different .22LR ammo. Both super sonic and subsonic. Most of our time is spent shooting 100 yards with Savage TRR-SR.

Wolf and Eley have been most accurate at 100, with Wolf best so far to date. A 100 yard 5 round group of .865" off a bipod. Not so say it's best overall just maybe did not have the right conditions yet for the Eley. Green Tag is pretty close.

Waxed Blazers often shoot sub 1" groups, which is nice from a bulk ammo, cost standpoint. Mini Mag, Velocitors etc. are all good but I really don't think any better than the Blazer for cost/performance.

RWS is pretty good as well. After that, I have never found a Federal, Rem or Win round that was worth a damn in my rifle. I stick w/ CCI 99% of the time.

Tempest have you tried the Federal Match 325 pack? I get really good groupings with it out of my Marlin mod 60.

Rim fire ammunition has to be tested in the specific rifle before conclusions can be drawn about performance, though in my experience, given a good barrel, match ammunition always outperforms standard rimfire.

In so far as Wolf Target match being an oxymoron, I had good luck with the stuff in a number of different small bore rifles.

These groups were all shot 100 yards prone with irons in small bore prone matches.

This is Wolf Extra Match, so I don’t know if it counts.

When I have chronographed SK standard plus, which is the same stuff as Wolf Target Match, the consistency of velocities with match ammunition is apparent when compared to standard ammunition or pseudo match ammunition.

Not only do you have to test every brand of ammo in your rifle to see how it does (every rifle works best with certain ammo) but you also have to test each lot of that ammo. So just because the Velocitors worked well this time it doesn't mean the next box or brick you get will do as well. Like another poster said, I'd buy up all the ammo I could get of that particular lot because Velocitors are not known to be particularly accurate for the msot part. What they are is powerful and good for shooting bigger animals.

I've shot Wolf ammo 100 yards many times and I've shot lots of MOA groups with it too. I've never managed to do that with Velocitors. I have done with CCI SV but again not with Velocitors. But then I don't usually shoot hunting ammo for target practice so maybe I could if I tried.

I was happy that my guns all favored Winchester ammo from the brick.

For example, my Marlin 60. At 50 yards, Wolf Match Target: 2.5" group. Winchester Dynapoint high-velocity: .625". My Henry H001 and Savage Mk2 were similar.

I don't doubt the Wolf is good stuff, it just never worked well with my guns. Plus, firing it releases a smell of burning soap.

Again, at the 50 yard mark, the Wolf stuff did pretty well. I don't know the twist of my barrel. I wonder if there is something to that. Maybe the slower rounds aren't spinning as quick, so by the time it gets out to 100 yards, the spin has slowed enough to adversely affect accuracy. I really don't know, and I don't know if the box of Velocitors was "a really good factory day" or not. I may pull out a box from the others bricks I have, test them to see how they do.

I have a brick of Wolf Match Extra for sale. Not sure if they would perform any better than the Match Target or not. What was kinda fun, however, was seeing the definite arch of the bullet as it reached the target. Seeing the little black bullet traveling through the air was kinda fun. SLOW bullet, obviously.

I have read that the .22 BPCR shooters favor one or another high velocity load. At 200 yards, the reduced windage is more important than 50 yard grouping.
HV loads typically perform very poorly out at 200yds and beyond. Once they go transonic, accuracy takes a nose dive. Even though there is a lot more drop, match loads will always be more accurate at long range.

.22 rifles are as picky as women.
My newest 10/22 is all over the place with match, standard velocity, and sub-sonic. It's quite acceptable with Blazer or Federal Valu-Packs. It's favorite, believe it or not, is CCI Stingers. Stingers will get me 3/4" or less at 50 yds. The only mods to the rifle are a Brimstone Teir 1 trigger job and 5 layers of electrical tape under the barrel at the fore end tip.

I shot up some Wolf today and just to put it bluntly it stunk to high heaven. I shot some CCI SV from the same CZ rifle right afterward and it did far better than the Wolf at least for a while. It wasn't that long ago that Wolf worked great in that same rifle. Where I live Wolf has gone to crap IMO. I can't believe what I paid for that brick and it shoots so badly. And I know it's the ammo. I found a box of Wolf from about 3 years ago on the shelf at my LGS and bought it. It was like my rifle was back to being great again. Actually it has always shot really well with the right ammo but lately the right ammo has been either Eley Match Black EPS or the super expensive Federal Gold Medal Ultramatch. Again the CCI has been doing better than the Wolf for quite a while and that ticks me off because the CCI is half the price of the Wolf or even less. They have really been turning out garbage at least in my neck of the woods. It's shocking how bad it's gotten. And that isn't just through one rifle either. My Savage has had the same results with it. I doubt I'll buy any more of it for a very long time. I'd rather plink with CCI than waste my money chasing tight groups with bad ammo. If I want to shoot any matches I'll just spring for the good stuff. I'm going to complain to Wolf because that's about 4 bricks in a row that have all been crap.
