I'm a "new member" here. I'm a lurker who reads but doesn't respond.

Anyways. I purchased my first two handguns today and thought I'd post.

First gun is a Springfield XD-9 Sub-compact (will be used for bedside and possibly CCW once i get permit)

Second one was purchased for my girlfriend.

Smith & Wesson 642 38special

We are going to my girlfriend's dads house tomorrow to see how they shoot.

What yall think?

Edit: One more picture with the shorter mag.

I didn't like the feel of the Glock grip I tried. I know they are nice guns too and comparable to the XD; but it just didn't feel right in my hand relative to this one.

Thanks for your comments.

Save yourself possible scrutiny from Agent Schmuckatelli and avoid multiple pistol transactions when possible.

Enjoy your purchases safely!

Who is Agent Schmuchatelli? Obviously a joke, but what do you mean by this?

My girlfriend actually purchased the 642 on my recommendation as it will eventually be her CCW -

So they aren't really BOTH for me, although I'll shoot both tomorrow.

XD

Pick up a Pearce adapter (whatever it's called) to replace the plate on the bottom of the short mag. It will give your pinky a place to rest.

Have your girlfriend give us a range report after she shoots about 100-150 rounds thru her .38 today.

Nice XD! You'll most likely find you like shooting it more w/ the extended mag. Give us a range report!

kostarae,
Welcome welcome, all that.

Nice selections. Should do you both well for self defense.

Think seriously about getting a couple of good .22lr's as well to add to the stable, 1 semi and 1 wheelgun. Cheaper to shoot, more fun to boot, great for training and newbies to the sport.

Linda writes about a range report for the 642 after putting a few rounds downrange. Someone is going to have a sore hand the next day or three if they do that (100-150 rds) on their initial outing and are not used to the felt recoil that the airweights offer. (Hence the unsolicited .22lr advice)

Do let us know how they shoot. Strong handed and weak handed. Your impression and GF's side of the story as well. Don't be surprised if GF likes your XD and wants one of her own. ;)

Regardless of how great of a shot your lady may or may not be, seriously consider some Crimson Trace laser grips for her snubby if she is going to carry the gun. The sights, as you will find, are not the greatest, and in a life or death situation, anyone will be hard pressed to focus on the front sight. Should she ever be in a hostile situation, God forbid, she'll most likely be focused on the threat, and it's convenient if that threat has a red dot on it.

Does your girlfriend like snub revolvers? I've found they're more popular with guys trying to shop for their girl than they are with the women that are expected to enjoy shooting them.

Welcome to THR, have fun shooting, be safe :)

Two huh? Someone jumped into the realm of gun ownership with both feet. :D

You did good, getting quality guns right of the bat. Is there a reason you bought small guns instead of full-sized ones?

I agree on the recommendation to get a .22lr. Nothing improves your shooting as much as practice. And a .22 will allow you to practice a lot.

I had discussed the pros and cons of the snub with my girlfriend prior to purchase and that's the one she choose.

The XD was definitely more pleasant to shoot then the snub. I shot all 100 rounds I bought for the trip in the XD but only about 40 out of the snub as it wasn't as fun to shoot.

My girlfriend is still a little gun shy and thinks somehow by shooting the gun it will end up hurting her somehow. She's worried about some type of "malfunction" that would fire the bullet at her. LOL --- So she didn't shoot nearly as much as I had hoped but still enjoyed my XD over the snub as it was easier to shoot.

I was debating between the Glock and XD in 9mm when I was purchasing and decided on the XD because it felt better in my hand. It felt good while shooting too and recoil was less than expected (Shooting Remington 110gr FMJ)

I choose smaller weapons because I plan on using them for CCW use and I have a small frame at 5'8 and prefer a more conceilable weapon. I plan on soon purchasing a Kel-Tec P32 for pocket carry and the XD will be used in the truck. (Once I get my CCW permit)

We had planned on my girlfriend getting a CCW permit but we are going to have to hold off on that until she becomes more comfortable firing the gun.

Thanks for all your comments.

Nice purchases.

Your choice for first gun is the same one that I made.

XD9sc is a great gun...i use it for CCW too. Get yourself a Crossbreed supertuck IWB holster...great combo.

Nice handguns!!

Hopefully your gf will learn to like the snubby,or you're in trouble.lol

what kind of loads did you have for the snubby? WE have one and it's a kicker for sure.

For the snub, we were using 130gr Winchester target rounds.

Thanks LuckyStrike for the suggestion.

Since you're a new shooter it doesn't surprise me that you don't like the revolver as much as the pistol. Pistol triggers are much easier to pull and revolvers take a little more practice to get used to, especially pocket revolvers.

Don't give up on the revolver, it's a great SD handgun. I wouldn't be without my M638...
