The video shows Mrs. Shannon "invested in more protection." :D

Video captures home invasion attempt

10:31 AM CST on Monday, January 7, 2008

By MONIKA DIAZ / WFAA-TV

An attempted break-in early Sunday morning led to a terrifying and unexpected wake up call for a woman in Glenn Heights.

While four men failed to break into Carrie Shannon's home on Brentwood Street, their attempt was captured on surveillance video.

Shannon was home alone when the men tried to kick in her door around 4:35 a.m.

"I immediately jumped up," she said of when she heard the loud kicking.

After hearing the men, Shannon said she got out of bed and called police on her cell phone.

"I grabbed my handgun and I proceeded right to the back, because as soon as I saw a shadow, I was going to go ahead and start shooting," she said.

After several kicks, the men gave up and took off.

"I just want to be safe here in my own home," Shannon said. "That's it. That's all I want."

Signs of the attempted home invasion were everywhere in the form of broken glass, damage to the door and a broken lock.

Shannon's home security camera didn't miss a beat either. It even caught one of the men cutting the phone line. The video was turned over to police.

"I hope you go to jail," she said of the suspects. "You need to leave people alone."

Shannon said she believes the incident may be connected to a burglary that happened at her home nearly three weeks ago. In that case, four men stormed into her home through the front door.

"[I'm] just a hard working woman trying to live, trying to support her son and trying to support herself and live a better life," she said.

In the first incident, the suspects stole at least $1,200.

The Glenn Heights Police Department said they believe both cases may be connected.

them hoodlums will get theirs soon.
shows clearly the man's face. once he is caught, im sure he will start giving names.

I'll volunteer! I think I'm in love. Pretty, rich, can handle a gun, wow.

I hope they catch the scumbags. I really doubt what they were planning was a simple burglary either. They cut the phone lines so she couldn't call for help. It appears they were after her. Scary.

camera's

what kind of security camers were those and where do i get some?
Night vision, motion detecting, etc. Nice cameras!
C-

When I saw the AR, and her talking in the background saying "And if they come back, this is what I'm gonna hit 'em with"...

...I couldn't help myself but to pump my fist and yell HELL YEAH!

That said, it is simply bone chilling to see young oxygen thieves cutting the phone lines. That kind of premeditation is part of everyone's worst nightmares.

Until one has had their home broken into as i have or actually had someone break in while you are at home,as i have, you just cannot truely understand the emotional impact it has on your mind.
These guys are truely lucky they didn't make it inside because a state like Texas gives the home owner a LOT of lattitude on how to respond to these ear ring wearing young pukes.
That womans door must be a very secure one not to have been breached by these guys.
People like this are a plague on the planet.

The cameras did not deter the goons from attempting to break in and their role was in gathering evidence. What stopped them was a better door.

BTW, nice gas piston Oly.

bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang....bang :p

very glad they didnt get in, imagine how she would feel if she had to kill those four guys, or worse, if she hadnt managed to get all of them :S

Interesting things to note.
1) Cameras (while useful) aren't a "security system". Hardened doors and windows are a security system.
2) "Just call the cops" falls down here as the thugs cut the phone lines (Keep your cell handy and use it first, forget the landlines).
3) Plan out your response ahead of time (the victim apparently had at least some sort of a "last resort" plan in place) and keep it simple.

Also a point I keep repeating because I feel it is so very important. If you see a badguy, you MUST assume that there is more than one! I thank God that the thugs didn't make it into the house but imagine if she unloaded into one and then faced the others with an empty gun.

I have to say I'm impressed at the generally dispassionate reporting by the media in that video clip. Must have killed them to call that rifle "extra protection".

if she lives alone. maybe, she should consider a panic room like the one in the movie " panic room".

I got a kick (pun intended) out of the fact that they had the big cable cutters and yet tried to kick in a door. The could have used the cutters to easily break open a window and just hop inside.

The lady done good.

Especially since she disclosed her address and a gun in the house (more burgular bait), she should consider a not so nice Rott or other good friend or two always at home as well. Too bad she has to deal with the drama.

Cell phone jammers are readily available overseas, and fairly easy to construct for someone with a little knowledge. I'm not saying a bunch of dumb thugs are likely to have one, I'm just saying there is no guarantee some more sophisticated BGs couldn't prevent you from using your cell in an emergency.

I agree with that but MAN does she ever put a good face on our right to self defense. Look at her, we have an apparently affluent and well educated (and well spoken) female who decided to be responsible for her own wellbeing and who made it work showing what WE can do if we are just allowed to.

WOW ! I am IMPRESSED.

Her well to do house is built like a fortress. She has thought out security on many levels and is ready to go with Plan B if necessary. Just as her living conditions are affluent, her new AR also looks quite pricey and appropriate for it's intended use as a house gun. She really knows how to do research.

They cut the phone line, I think there is more going on here than a simple robbery.

You are right. It was a home invasion. I doubt they were going to leave her in a corner and say nice things to her as they cleaned out her home. If it was personal, I doubt they would have given up.

Cutting lines is a pretty standard practice in multi thug crimes from what I understand. Slows down alarm verification and stops calls for help. You should count on your land lines being worthless in a break in.

I don’t know about the cell phones and networks where you all live, but I would NOT waste time calling 911 on my cell until AFTER I was in my fall back location and armed. Cells are too slow to connect when all is well. Add a busy network or just plain lack of signal strength from being in a house and you could spend 30 to 40 seconds just waiting for a voice to say, “911 operator. What is your emergency?” See how far you can get into your house in 30 seconds.

Oh... and isn't it JUST A SHAME that she wasn’t made to wait “x” number of days to buy a new gun. And it’s a double shame it was and evil AR. It’s so sad that she could just go into a store without a license/FOID/Permit/reason and nullify the disparity of force like that. When will we stop the sale of effective weapons to legal citizens? WHEN? I ask you, for the children, something MUST BE DONE! ;)

Someone in the DFW area should invite her to the range.

Funny. I wonder if she knows Larry Correia or if experience has made her come to the realization that, given a choice in armaments, “All Handguns Suck.” Why do I see the scene in Jaws when Brody says, “You’re going to need a bigger boat,” playing over and over in her head as she stands there with a handgun while 4 people are outsider her home? Looks like she got a bigger boat.
