Uberti 1849 with 5” or 6” barrel? Did they ever make one?

Both of these Replica Arms 1848 Pocket .31 revolvers were made by ASM (XIX/1963 for the 1st one) with 6" barrels and load levers. Note the short frame, short forcing cone, and squareback trigger guards compared to the 1849 Pocket pistols. The 1st one is mine, the second one is owned by a member on another forum.

Haven't seen a Model 1849 with those barrel lengths but Taylor and Co. Firearms website shows a Model 1851 in .36 cal. with a 5" barrel; out of stock of course!

As per their catalogs, EMF sold the steel framed ASM .31 caliber Pockets, Baby Dragoons and Wells Fargos in barrel lengths of 4 and 6 inches.

In the 1964 Armi San Marco catalog:
In addition to the 4 an 6 inch barrels, they also advertise that they made their .31 caliber Pockets and Wells Fargos in a 5 inch version but not their Baby Dragoons.
Their Pockets and Wells Fargos have the Stagecoach Holdup on the cylinder but their Baby Dragoons list the Texas Ranger - Indian Fight.
Their Baby Dragoons and the Wells Fargos have square back trigger guards and their Pockets have round ones.
Their Baby Dragoons and Pockets have loading levers while their Wells Fargoes do not.

However you will see listings in the online auctions for them that call them by various other names.

If you set up searches in Gun Broker or other auctions under the various years, types, calibers and barrel lengths you want, they pop up every so often.
Note that Armslist now charges $3.99 per month if you wish to be able to contact any private sellers. Dealers may pay to cover free contacts by prospective customers.

ASM also made brass framed versions of these .31 caliber revolvers for CVA up until 2000 when ASM ceased to exist and became American Western Arms (AWA) for a couple of years before they too closed.
I do not know if CVA carried all of the models or barrel lengths?

At a gun show in Spokane in the early 1980s, I encountered a reproduction 1849 for sale with a 5" barrel. The man selling it said it balanced better than the 4 or 6" barrel models.
And I believe he was right.
I've regretted not getting it since that encounter. I've never seen another one, and I've been looking in online auctions for years.
That little .31-caliber Colt copy had a sweet balance to it with a 5" barrel.

You know that '51 Navy with the 5" barrel I said was Out Of Stock a couple of days ago...well it's now showing In Stock for $358 at Taylor's and Co.!

Bummer! I would go for it but between moving this year and having a ton of remodeling done, my wife and I are forgoing our usual gift exchange. I guess it will have to be my vicarious thrill for today that I at least found some black powder revolvers in stock!

I'm working on getting a replica example of each original I have first. I need a pocket model (4 and 6 inch if possible), a pocket police, an 1861 navy, and an 1855 Root pocket model if possible.

I forgot to mention above that ASM also did the .31 Pocket with the half round dragoon style barrel.
I am not sure what barrel lengths were made it that style and they are the rarest of the ASM Pockets.

The original Colt model 1849 came in 3"-6" barrel lengths as standard order. Over the years also 5 shot cylinders or 6 shot, with or without loading levers and large or smaller trigger guards. Apparently from written accounts the 5" was highly regarded for small game use and no doubt the 6" was even better for that use. people actually wanted and used the 1849 .31 for getting a little something to eat, alot more than defense.

I have no doubt as to your claim as i feel cap and ball guns performance is highly underrated. I wonder what kind of small game people shot with these small caliber guns. Perhaps rabbit and small fowl like grouse? I would think its like shooting a .22 with similar performace..and we all know that the .22 has been used for all sorts of game big or small. Do you have any recorded examples of these guns being used for small game in a pinch? Id love to read up on these accounts. Thanks for sharing sir!

Wow, just Wow ! Looks like a .32 caliber Rabbit getter for sure, or a small deer in the eye . Or putting some lead into a hostile shooting at me.

Just found this on GB. Nominal 6" barrel (5.75"). Same length as my ASM 1848 Pocket. Needs some function work per seller.

Jim
