Uh... is this actually a Mossberg stock?

So, I'm getting a Mossberg 500 Serbu Super Shorty in a few months. Mailed the check today, so it'll probably be a couple months. This is going to be my first and most likely only shotgun.

I ordered some reloading stuff and a SpeedFeed pistol grip from Midway. I've heard bird's head style grips (like those on Remington "witness protection" shotguns) reduce felt recoil a fair amount, and that'd make it much easier to reach the tang safety, too. Knoxx BreachersGrip just isn't in the budget right now.

Well, this is what I got.

Now, there's always the possibility that I'm some kind of idiot, but now that I've finally taken the time to look at pictures of Mossbergs and where the trigger guard is positioned relative to the stock, that does not look like a Mossberg grip to me. There's definitely a cutout for a Remington style trigger guard on there.

So either the Speedfeed pistol grip for Mossbergs is very poorly designed, or I got a Remington 870 one by mistake. I'm thinking it's the latter, since Speedfeed is supposed to have a decent reputation, and also, the grip was completely disassembled, including the sling mount (instructions say they should come pre-assembled), and did not include a rubber plug for the back of the grip. And the box is clearly marked Mossberg 500/590, so it probably wasn't Midway's screw-up.

But it might be the first one. Instructions say that Remington grips use a 3/16" hex head screw and Mossberg and Winchester ones use 1/4". The included bolt does have a 1/4" head.

Don't know. Does that look more like a Mossberg stock or a Remington stock, to the people that own both, and can compare 'em?

edit: Okay, I just looked at the stock in the right light, and in very faint letters, it says "R870" on the side. Mystery solved. Back to Midway it goes.

Now I checked some schematics, and it looks like Remington stocks don't have that circular thing on them? Yet the thing says "R870" on it, pretty clearly. Maybe it is designed to go on both, but just isn't that well thought out?

Ugh, someone that owns both, help me out here.

Looks right to me.

IIRC, the Mossy 500 does have a little circular part protruding into the underside of the grip. I'm too lazy to get up and go look at my mossy right now, but I'll take a look tonight and If I'm wrong I'll post a correction.

I've had a mispackaged Speedfeed stock before.
I contacted Speedfeed who said there can be some mispackaged items on occasion and had me contact the original retailer.
My mail-order-retailer effected an exchange without further problems.

From the photo it looks like a Mossberg stock to me, and I've sold quite a few.

Full stock would require a $200 transfer tax instead of a $5 one, and that's not in the budget.

If it is a Mossberg stock, why the heck is it marked R870? Very confusing. I e-mailed Speedfeed's tech support, hopefully that'll give a conclusive answer, without having to track down someone with a Mossberg shotgun that I can borrow. It does definitely seem to be made primarily for the Remington, though. The edges around that space for the trigger guard are pretty sharp, I'd need to smooth it down with a file to comfortably use it on a Mossberg, probably. If it fits.

I took a pic of an old Mossy pistol grip I had laying around for you. Looks right to me.

Can you tell me how far out of the back of the receiver the trigger housing sticks? On this grip, the cutout goes 0.417" back according to my caliper. Seems like that's a little too far and would leave a gap, but I don't have a Mossy to check.

Ryan, my grip is hollow, there is about an inch of space in the rear trigger guard/housing area. Mine isn't machined for a precise fit in that area, sorry bud.

It does definitely seem to be made primarily for the Remington, though.
The front of that grip where it will meet the receiver looks nothing like what the same area of a Remington stock/grip looks like. It looks like a Mossberg grip. Check it once you get the gun. If it needs a little sanding/filing to get a perfect fit it's not a big deal. Some aftermarket accessories are made a few thousandths over size in case you the gun you're trying to put it on is on the loose side of the manufacturer's allowable tolerance. If your gun is on the tight side you may have to do a little fitting. You'll be ok.
I've finally taken the time to look at pictures of Mossbergs and where the trigger guard is positioned relative to the stock, that does not look like a Mossberg grip to me. There's definitely a cutout for a Remington style trigger guard on there.
Its probably a slight inlet to prevent interference with the Mossberg slide release which is located at the rear on the side of the triggerguard.

As to why its faintly marked R870 I have no idea.
