.........how close in size are they to the real thing? My wife has done leather work for years and I've helped her with some things. Now that the economy tanked and work comes off and on (Construction worker, more off than on these days), I considered making holsters to help with the bills. I have a few pieces and friends have others, looking for models I don't have or can't borrow. The blue dummy guns cost a small fortune (why is that, for a hunk of plastic?). So I did a quick search on airsofts and notice that there are some pretty realistic cheap models out there, you can even make out the models that some of the detailing is so close. I don't know about handguns but my buddy has an AK airsoft that is so close to the real thing that if you didn't see the orange tip, you'd be scared! And it is almost exact in size and detail. I'm asking so that I can some what shape-mold some holsters. Any help or suggestions here guys? I appreciate your help and input as I always have in the past. Mods, please feel free to move this, I wasn't sure where to post.

Weight doesn't matter much....

....looking for shape so I can mold the leather. Just not sure how airsoft guns measure up to the real thing. My wife will make sure I use quality leather because she'll be in on this and she's anal about anything she works on. I like to pay attention to detail also because my work demands it (electrician).

From the ones I have seen I would say they are really close on size. A friend of mine had a walther PPS style airsoft gun, if it wasn't 100% dead on, size wise it was such a negligible amount it you could use for holster sizing.

what I had was a glock 17 airsoft,I did not have a real glock to compare it to. but I had a friend who had a real glock, I remember saying "this is very similar to my airsoft" but it's been a long time.

I have a couple of KJW SIG P229 airsoft guns, and they fit my real P229's holsters like the real thing.

I dont know what they get for the aluminum mold guns used to make holsters, but I paid about $110 each for the airsoft guns, so you might be better off getting the mold gun.

They're probably pretty dang close, enough to use for sizing and training. The predecessor to the AirSoft Line was Daisy's "SoftAir" line, back in the late eighties. I had the Model 59, made to replicate the S&W pistol of the same moniker. I also had a S&W 659, and they were virtually identical in size; I tried the Daisy in my duty holster, and it was a snug fit. I actually still have that Daisy, but do not have the fake "brass" shells that the 6mm BBs are pressed into before firing (the Daisy ejected the "spent brass" with each shot), so I cannot shoot it.

Most of 'em are darn close to 1:1. Maybe a a millimeter off here and there, but I doubt enough to really influence fit that much.

I purchased some CZ 75 Airsoft guns made by UHC, Taiwan a number of years back, and they were duck's nuts on, size wise.

These were the plastic ones, so the weight is way off, even with the metal weights in the mags.
