Well, I'm glad to know that the PRISONS will be on the lookout for these things, but they can overlook any of those plain old run of the mill knives that happen to find their way behind bars. (roll eyes)
I think most stabbing instruments in prison are made from things in prison. Worrying about few hundred dollar knives that require replacement co2 cartridges being smuggled in seems rather silly.
Seems like propoganda for the masses of that nation. Associate 'evil' knife with prison population, makes 'evil' knife seem even more evil.
Stabbing instruments in prisons are made from practicly any metal that can be aquired, plastic that can be melted etc
They even melt plastic bags, styrofoam, plastic containers like hygiene and food containers etc
One interesting weapo was tightly rolled paper that was wrapped with saran wrap and then fire hardened and sharpened. That was used to inflict some horrific stab wounds as it was well over a foot long and held its sharpened shape.
Those are the items made by restricted prisoners.
Many others are on work details with various potentialy lethal tools on a regular basis, those can be used by them, used to make other weapons, or smuggled to other prisoners. Prisons are ruled by gangs in many places, so anything that is in the hands of one prisoner can find its way into the hands of another prisoner as part of thier politics. Failure to deliver something to fellow gang members can result in them being 'disciplined' by the gang.
They hardly need to smuggle stabbing intruments into prisons, especialy exotic ones. If they are going through that much trouble to successfuly smuggle in items made of metal, they can just as easily be firearms which also cost about as much.
So put this in the propoganda catagory, meant to scare the citizens and support knife control in general by associating particularly nasty knives with prisons. Just like 'assault weapons' were often associated with gang bangers here in the states, while stolen handguns were the primary firearms used by them in most killings. Drumming up support to ban handguns was clearly not going to work as they were held by many Americans, but drumming up support against the exotic 'assault weapons' (newly created term then) held by fewer was more effective. (Including many types which since the first AWB have become extremely popular and normal among Americans in ways they were not before.)
Propoganda to achieve a desired control or future legislation.
