Today at Thanksgiving dinner as I got up to get a second cup of after-dinner coffee, #3 nephew asked "Uncle Kirk, why do you have a gun in your belt?"

I replied, "because I should carry it my hand as it is much faster, but I need two hands to eat.":D

So, next time a blissninny or a 4 year old asks you why you have a gun on your belt, just tell them this.:p

I like the "Cornered Cat" one: "'Cause I can't carry a policeman on my back."

Why does anybody need to carry into a shopping mall?

Usually you don't need to, but it is sure nice to already have it when you get back out to the parking lot, where crime is more common.

Why do I hypothetically carry? Because I would like the ability to fight back if I have to...calling 911 is reactionary and too late unless you stage your attacks. I have a friend who was obeying the law when he was carjacked, beaten to a pulp, thrown from his car and his date beaten & robbed. I have another friend who was shot in a health club parking lot in a good part of town, mid day.
Why do I carry? Hypothetically? Because I don't want to be a victim...hypothetically :D

Is this the answer you give to four year olds? ;)

This is why:

Police say Dominick Sergio Maldonado, 20, of Tacoma, marched through the mall shooting randomly at shoppers before taking four hostages in a Sam Goody music store...

Happened last year around Thanksgiving.

I got made at my girlfriend's grandmother's house the other day. We stopped by to say hey, and her mom and stepdad was there, he sent off for his permission slip recently. So he mentioned that, and all of the sudden everyone's conversation revolved around guns.

Her stepdad mentioned that I have mine, and her grandmother was caught off guard. When she asked if I was carrying at that moment, and I answered, she was caught off guard again. When I informed her that she'd never seen me without one, her eyes got to be the size of plates. To be honest, I think she was the only person there that didnt know already.

I cant remember what was said in the conversation after that, but it went a lot better than most of the ones I've read about online. Considering that this happened the beginning of the month, and we ate dinner there yesterday, I think it went pretty well. Which is a good thing, her memaw is a great cook. Of course, not too many southern grandmothers arent.

The best one I've heard was from my instructor.

Question: "hy do you carry a gun?"
Answer: "Because I'm getting to old to beat people to death." :what:

Winston Churchill had a good comment. IIRC "A gentleman very rarely needs a pistol. But when he does, he needs it very badly."

I've always favored the late Jeff Cooper''s answer to that question. "Because I choose to". Really no other explanation needed.

Keeping with the answer to an almost 4 year grand daughter, when she asks

"Grandma why do you have a gun?"
"Because it's my job to protect you!"

KISS to the little ones! And they understand that!

To an adult my response is typically that old quote "Because bad men won't disarm, good men must not".

to a child my response is a simple variation, "in case we run into bad guys who want to hurt us".

I've used a variation of that several times. Normally its along the lines of "Guns are like seatbelts and fire extinguishers, when you need one, you need it now!"

I used to only carry when I would go some place where I felt I may be out of my comfort zone. I began working for the local pd, not in the police faculty, but in communications. Seeing daily the crime that surrounds you that never seems to be what our liberal news media wants to portray has been a huge eye opener. I have also learned that people typically call the police after they have been victimized and not typically in the process of the victimization. I have a family and although I know police are trained to do their job and protect their citizens, no one cares for my family as much as I do and I believe my job is to protect my family from harm as well as the standard responsibilities. So I carry my handgun religiously now and do my best to make sure I'll be up to the task if and when I have to resort to that kind of force. I would recommend to anyone, going and sitting for a couple hours in your local law enforcement communications division if they allow it. It will open your eyes to what goes on in your immediate area, the things you don't typically see.
