I just purchased the Limited edition Ruger MKII MK512CA and it came with the Standard Scope mount and rings. Does anyone know if the standard mount will work with a Ultra dot red dot scope? I am going to send the 1" rings back for the 30mm but was wondering about the base mount. Not sure if I should get the extended or keep the standard.. Thanks in advance

When I got my "slabside" I chose to use neither the mount or rings as supplied by Ruger. I opted for a Weigand scope rail, which can be installed without removing the rear site and somebody else's mounting rings. First of all, the Ruger base is not a "weaver" base, and kind of restricts you to using their rings, which in my estimation, are far too heavy, and are overkill for .22 use. The aluminum rings I used are about half the weight of Rugers, and it all adds up when you're trying to hold that thing out in front of you! :)

The ultradot rocks. One sits on my sig trailside. Yes, it should work with the standard mount. You can buy an ultradot in either 25mm or 30mm with the standard dot, or variable dot size. So your 1" rings should work, obviously the 30mm will give a slightly wider field of view.

While Ruger recommends the extended scope base for use with the UltraDot, I found that the standard base worked just fine on my gun, a Slabside using a 30MM Ultradot.

You can do what I did: Call them and ask the very nice lady who handles these requests to send both the rings and extended base in advance of you returning the others. Ruger will charge your credit card the full amount prior to shipping them to you, but will credit you back the total less $5 when you return the unused ones. In my case, both the charge and credit showed up on the same credit card statement (they're quick).

By far and away the best way to mount a red dot on a Ruger .22 auto is with SoLow mounts.

http://www.solow.com/

I've used both methods and the SoLow is MUCH better than rings & rail. It's lighter, sits lower, and you can get the sight well rearward to help with balance.

Easily worth what you pay for them.

I had a set of SoLows on my 5 1/2" Mk II. They were OK, but as you had to remove the rear sight and epoxy them in, you couldn't switch between dot and irons on the fly. And if you don't use the epoxy to glue them to the receiver, they do move around (getting the epoxy off without scratching the receiver is tough-acetone did not soften it as they claim). Using the epoxy is necessary because they use steel screws threaded into aluminum bodies and you can't generate enough clamping pressure to keep them set. Plus, they're not something you take on and off too many times before the aluminum threads strip out.

Reddot goes on the fritz? Rings come off. Scrape epoxy off receiver and rings and do it again.

Position of the rings is limited by the rear sight dovetail and position of the ejection port, you DO NOT have any flexibility in the placement of the rings.

Make sure you mount the receiver to the frame before the epoxy hardens, as you're mounting these on a round receiver with no point of reference, they can go on crooked and make it impossible for you to get the two back together. Also, dry fit them first because mine required filing of the fingers before the frame would mate back up to the receiver.

There was lots of discussion on the old Mk II forum about these things. Unfortunately there is no search function, but you may be able to find other comments by browsing around: http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/52578?it=0

They were better than drilling and tapping the receiver. Barely. But given the choice, I'll choose a proper mount.

No thanks!

Larryw,

I've never had such issues with my SoLow mount. I put a very thin layer of epoxy on the inside of the rings and let it harden before putting them on the gun. After that I could take the rings on and off without any damage to the barrel, which I would do for every cleaning. The SoLow would also keep its zero when remounted. The SoLow never moved on me.

I could have sworn that in the old Network54 forum the SoLows were generally regarded as the best mount available. I know I certainly prefer it over the other mounts I have.
