Amazing a man gets shot doing his job and people assume it's his fault somehow.

Give the guy a little credit.

If they give him a uniform and expect him to enforce laws, they really should let him carry. If he's not responsible enough to carry he's not responsible enough to enforce laws. There's no gray zone on this that I can see. If the campus security can't be trusted with firearms then they can't be trusted period and should not be in uniform at all.

We run into that situation up here in the villages with unarmed VPSO's. My own views on the matter have changed.

Hi Joab

But then I guess it's always fun when you can call a uniform a dumbass

'Making light of uniforms that guard us while we sleep,
are cheaper than those uniforms and they're starvation cheap.'

I wasn't there so I can't say one way or another except for one part. It's a horrible thing when ANYBODY gets hurt on the job. If the injury is his fault, their fault or nobody's fault makes difference none. But as was said in another post, if the guy is paid to do a police officer's job and assume the risks inherent in those duties he should be armed. If he's not he should be given a radio and a panic button and told not to leave his transport under any circumstance.

In the menwhile, it's my hope he recovers quickly with no permanent damage.

You do realize that my post was sarcasm making basically the same point you make and made in response to the kid being called an imbecile, right?

Now you've escalated the argument to threat-level Rudyard.

Police cadets model behavior after police and are given limited police functions. It is, one the whole, a pretty sound idea. In reality however, they should be armed or accompanied by an officer who is in cases like this. It's hard to judge as many colleges have 'security' patrols that aren't even cadets but just students who have passed some minimal training and a background check-often used for late night escort. They aren't usually attired like the actual police in these cases however.

The faculty and students carrying? Fine by me, in fact I am happily aware of a few students who do carry at my school, but the faculty and my fellow students aren't in the business of enforcing the law. Self-defense is one thing and administrating justice/enforcing the law something entirely else.

Poorly trained campus cops with tasers and guns is just a terrible idea. They are ticket writers and should be kept that way.

City Police departments have enough trouble keeping their officers from using tasers inappropriately.

That is because somehow word got around that tazers are non lethal devices used to project authority, other than a device that can be used so the chance of killing someone who is a danger but still doesn't need to shot can be diminished.
