Under appreciated rifle?

I'm gonna say:

Savage

Rossi single shots

CZ 550

don't get the appreciation they deserve, though Savages have definitely made some headway in this area in the last 5 years.

Far and away, the Post 64 Model 70, gun writers killed it. While the first 5 or so years the gun had some issued with fit and finish, but since those were solved, there was no reason at all to put it down, especially compared to its main competitor, the rem 700. The pre-64s were good rifles, but I firmly believe that the post 68-70 Model 70 push-feed was better for everything except dangerous game (where controlled round is safer to load while you're running for your life!!) Also just MY opinion, the gunwriters who were badmouthing the Monte Carlo style stocks ought be beat over the head with all the "classic" stocks that have been made since. That straight line coming out the back of a bolt action make them all look exceedingly PLAIN, even with a pretty piece of wood.....

AR 15. For the same reasons why KC Marine said. Since this is my second post, I have no idea how to quote what he wrote. But I think he is right, most people have never carried the AR15 to war, just the range. Alot of the bad stuff that is said about AR's is just crap that civilians hear about them. Alot of people say they are overrated. I tend to diagree. I think it is the other way around. I by no means think that I am better than anybody, because alot of you are smarter than I am on guns, but I will tell you, and this is coming from a soldier that has spent 14 years in the Army, the AR is a great rifle and under rated.

I think the most looked-down-upon rifle with an undeserved reputation is probably the MAS-36 or Lebel.
I recall reading a gun-rag test of the MAS-36. The writer got all dewy-eyed over how "cleverly" the bayonet stowed under the barrel. Bear in mind this is a needle-bayonet, perfectly useless in modern war.

That (and the lack of a safety) kind of sums up the MAS-36 for me -- a clever way to stow a heavy and useless accessory.

The Winchester 94XTR Big-Bore in .375 Winchester. Fantastic meplat, ballistic coefficient, but it was a marketing failure.

Ammunition costs aside, it's my favorite woods gun in the lower 48.

The good old 30-30 (Winchester or Marlin). Probably taken more deer than any other rifle.

Ditto the MAS and the other French war rifles back to the Lebel. They were incredibly innovative, esp. prior to WWI.

The 1917 Enfield never gets enough credit, and is unfairly overlooked in favor of the 1903 Springfield.

if arisaka ammo was not 40 dollars a box, and someone(like cz) did a modern chambering for it, you would see arisakas fly off the shelf. And why not? they are proly the most accurate ww2 rifle made, before 43 that is, they have fantastically right on sights, and the round's case is about the size of a savage hi power, shooting a 140 grain , 6.5 bullet; just a tad smaller than a 308 case. I personally would buy ammo by the case, if they could do this.

otherwise, i will just say , anything cz.

The lowly Winchester 94 30-30 carbine is very underappreciated these days. Even though it is one of the finest rifles ever concieved by mortal man, imo.

I would say the SKS as many judge it by the fact that they are inexpensive and were used by Warsaw Pact nations.

After that I would say the MAS 36.

I have to second the Mosin family.

Their ugly and unwieldy but they did serve their purpose, and did it well. It has to be one of the simplest designs out there. It'll hold MOM (Minute of Man) even with a sewer pipe for a bore and its ammo is still in military use after 120 years.

The lebel seems like a good candidate, the first smokeless powder rifle, after all.

Kcmarine, travis74, and 45b@cav, thanks for serving!

Krag 30/40, It's accurate has a smooth as silk action, it may be a little slow to load but it's a real shooter. +1 for the AR15 talk I have a love of them from my desert warrior days.

my vote goes for the hakim

i have a hakim in 8mm mauser, it is one of the most accurate autoloaders i have ever shot. i makes my garand look silly at truly long distance. it has a factory 10 round mag that loads with stripper clips. i purchased a modified 25 round mg-13 mag. it has a muzzle brake compensator built in. it wasn't cheap but man it is a true main battle rifle.

The Ted Williams single shot lever action .22, short - long - and long rifle plinker/ hunter and homeland defense weapon of choice for a 8 year old.

Mine must've went through 10,000 rds in 40 years and never once did it fail to feed, fail to fire, or fail to eject. The thing is I've never heard anyone else brag about em dang it.

ok, maybe it was 7500 rds but there's still time left on the clock.
