UNC Mourns Student Body President's Death

Chapel Hill, N.C. — A solemn crowd of thousands of people flocked to the quad outside Polk Place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus Thursday afternoon to mourn the loss of its student body president – the victim of a shooting that has sent shockwaves through the UNC community.

Chapel Hill police confirmed hours earlier that a woman found dead in a neighborhood about a half-mile from the campus on Wednesday was that of Eve Marie Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga.

Police found her body at the corner of Hillcrest Road and Hillcrest Circle about 5:30 a.m. while responding to reports of gunshots nearby. The UNC senior suffered from multiple gunshot wounds – including one to the head, authorities said.

"We're all in a state of shock," UNC Chancellor James Moeser said during the informal gathering that drew an estimated 5,000 people, most who held each other and cried.

"We are all hurting. We are all grief-stricken – stunned," he said. "This university needs an enormous group hug. It's OK to cry. It's OK to be filled with grief."

The UNC Bell Tower tolled every 30 seconds preceding the 3 p.m. gathering, and flowers behind the old Campus YMCA building marked a makeshift memorial.

"She was just an incredible person that I think had an affect on a lot of people's live," said UNC senior Katie Eagan, who knew Carson. "The way in which she died was obviously a shock. I think we're all just trying to process it right now."

Carson, a pre-med major studying both political science and biology, was active in both leadership and service roles while she was a student. As a Morehead-Cain scholar, she spent her summers volunteering and working overseas in Ecuador, Egypt and Ghana.

She was also a tutor at Githens Middle School in Durham her junior year and an assistant coach with Girls on the Run in 2005, according to the university.

"Eve Carson personified the Carolina spirit. She did it, perhaps, more profoundly than anyone I've known my whole time here," Moeser said. "She felt the very pulse and heartbeat of this university."

Meanwhile, Chapel Hill police told Fox 50's NC Wanted, investigators located Carson's blue 2005 Toyota Highlander Thursday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Investigators said they believe it had been stolen after the crime.

With no suspects or possible motives, officers spent Wednesday and part of Thursday following up and searching for leads to try to identify Carson. Police found no identification on her body and considered a physical description and a pair of rare tennis shoes to be key in helping find out who she was.

"We're at the very beginning of this investigation," Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Currin said. "A lot of it, up to this point, was just trying to figure out who the victim was."

Currin urged anyone with information about that might help police to call the police department at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.

Calling her a person who touched lives not only on campus but also throughout the town, Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy said the town is also reeling from Carson's death.

"Her service as student body president, a member of the (UNC) Board of Trustees and other ways only provides a glimpse of the person that Eve was," he said.

"She was happy, vivacious, intelligent, engaged and a presence in our community whose absence leaves a permanent void in our hearts and in our lives."

I'm a UNC grad student and am following the story. She was killed not two blocks from the home of a friend of mine who matched the description of the body... that was a tense moment.

They found her car about a mile away near Franklin Street.

Sad and tragic, however I fail to see the need to post about every "gun crime" that happens.

For several reasons here are two right off the top of my head,

One, maybe we can learn something from the facts surrounding these situations given the high percentage of people on this board who carry regularly. Not a lot to go on yet but there will be more.

Two, as sure as cats have climbing gear, there is some anti-gun whack job preparing to use this tragedy and others like it, as an excuse to remove firearms from law abiding citizens. So we need to be aware and pro-active with our argument, this girl should have been armed, she should have been mentally prepared to defend her life, she should have been a warrior not someones prey.

I'm prepared to take heat for what I am gonna say but I am gonna say it anyway.

She's out alone at 1:30am? (thats the time of death being reported)

Is there any teaching of personal safety anymore?

Didn't a parent or anyone somewhere along the way explain how the world is not always a safe place?

Certainly I am not saying she brought this on herself or asked for it in any way but man, the lack of attention to personal safety is running rampant in this country.

lacoochee
It's not like we don't know that crime happens.
If you choose to use this example to push an agenda then you are no different than the antis that use these tragedies to their own political gain.

You say she should have been armed. Perhaps she chose not to. However we don't know if her being armed could have prevented her death as the details are scarce. Even then we are in the realm of supposition and assumptions which makes this an exercise in futility.

Sometimes bad things happen.

BTW: I clicked on it because the title made it seem like it was another school shooting, in which case it would have some relevance as schools are "gun free" zones. This seems like some random act of violence or maybe a domestic dispute.

I agree with TexasRifleman.
While everyone should be able to walk the street at any time of the day or night, it is not the case today.

That does not mean that she brought it on herself, but doesn't anyone pay attention to the fact that the odds of being attacked are far greater after most are gone from the street?

Regards,
Jerry

This is a gun forum. This was a gun crime. It was not just any victim.
Nowhere does the headline say this was an on campus shooting.
Sorry, your valuable time was wasted hnk45acp and Bazooka Joe71.
The nitpicking starts to become ridiculous.
lacoochee is correct.Don't like it,move on to the next thread.

Very sad but I think that a lot of this kind of thing could be avoided if people were more careful. They need to read some of SM's writings on situational awareness.

Fox News Channel the #1 cable network just spent the 15 minutes between 10:15 and 10;30 in primetime ,discussing Eve Carson's inexplicable demise.
They feel it's important news.
So do I.So much so I think I'll start another thread.jakemccoy you are so right. Its heart breaking.
Warning:Do not click on that new thread if you think its campus shooting related.
It's not.

Regardless, I'm guessing that she was a legally disarmed victim.

If you guys can actually get together, we may be able to stop this from happening to someone else. Maybe not this year. But in the foreseeable future.

If.

You are touchy.
Have some milk and cookies ,and go directly to bed.
You'll feel better in the morning, sweet pea.

You are professional.

Did you go to college? Thinking kids aren't gonna stay out late sometimes is pretty silly.

This town has a low crime rate and the neighborhood where she was killed is particularly safe in general. I would not have felt at all unsafe walking through that neighborhood at night.

Now Crunker, milk and cookies are not constructive?
My mom would be appalled.
And we are both from New Jersey.
I'm disappointed in the lack of backup from the Garden State.

If you choose to use this example to push an agenda -- Okay, I will bite, which example should I use? Political gain? What do politics have to do with this?

You're right being armed and aware of her surroundings would not at all have been helpful. I guess I can hang up my six shooter and make war no more, bad things happen sometimes, Imshallah.

I'm sorry for telling you to hang up your sixgun
I'm sorry for telling you to be ignorant of your surroundings
I'm sorry for saying that her being armed and aware would have been useless
I'm sorry for thinking that you wanted to raise awareness about self defense
I'm sorry for all those things you think I'm saying but actually didn't.

So please accept my apology and I will move on.

I'm guessing that she was a legally disarmed victim.

Everyone makes their own choices, she made hers and paid the price.

Maybe we need volunteers to stroll the street with signs saying;

"I regret to inform the general public that bad people DO exist, please take this as your final warning to take control of your destiny, no one owes you a thing."

So please accept my apology and I will move on

I can't speak for lacoochee,but Crunker1337 is correct. I was too abrupt with hnk45acp.
He has a perfect right to his opinion that too many threads on THR are "filler".
I disagree in this instance, but in many cases he is correct.
