My dad and I walked through a local gun show yesterday just to browse. Both of us are very picky about what guns pique our interest and we usually won’t see a handful of interesting guns and pretty much everyone one will be priced well above reasonable market value.

Well yesterday I walked past a guy’s table and noticed he had a Kimber 84 Classic. Something that usually causes me to at least slow down and look at the caliber and price. This one was a 7mm-08. Ok, not 257 Rob like I would have preferred, but still a good caliber. Then I looked at the price and it was $850. Ok, now I’m interested enough to actually ask to pick it up and give it a look. It had a garbage Bushnell Trophy scope on that wasn’t even leveled. But the gun had really pretty wood. I couldn’t find a flaw anywhere on the metal and the stock had one small scratch that you had to look very hard to find. I told the guy it was a nice rifle, but the scope didn’t belong on that gun. He said he had never fired the gun and just threw the scope on before the show. I asked if he would consider selling without the scope and he said he’d take $50 off the price without the scope. I looked at the base and rings and they were both Leupold, so another plus. I thanked the guy and we kept walking around.

My dad thought $800 for Kimber 84 Classic with really pretty wood was a bargain. I thought it was too, but I just dropped $750 last week on a 300BO pistol build and didn’t really want to spend any more money. But as we walked, I kept thinking about the gun. Eventually I decided I’d go back by and look at it again. The gun just felt so good in my hands. Amazingly slim wrist, slim forend, lightweight, it just kept checking off boxes on my personal must-have list. I ended up offering the guy $750 cash without the scope. He thought about it a long time and eventually agreed! So I am now the owner of a gorgeous Kimber 84 Classic in 7mm-08.

I threw a Nikon scope on that I had laying around at home, but the plan will be to get a better quality Leupold scope for it maybe this Christmas. I’ll take some photos when I can, but I’m extremely excited about my unplanned gun show purchase! I rarely buy anything at gun shows!

I always wanted the Kimber 84 or Winchester 70 pattern but keep coming back to the Ruger Hawkeye All Weathers. Similar fire controls and mechanics but make a better drag through the woods gun. Those Kimbers and Winchesters look so good in the display cabinet or wall rack though!

FWIW I think the 7mm-08 cartridge may be the most underrated cartridge. Just enough gas in the tank to be enough but light enough that it is a joy to shoot the cartridge.

I happen to agree. I hunt my own property, so I've got nice big trails for ATVs and UTVs and I can walk to all my stands from a trail of some kind. The hardest part for me about keeping a rifle from getting banged up seems to be getting into and out of a UTV and getting into and out of a tree stand. I've gotten all my stands switched over now to all ladders, so I can keep the rifle slung on my shoulder when getting in and out as opposed to pulling the gun up by a rope. So I'm hoping I can keep this gun looking good for a long time to come. It probably won't see any action this year however. Last year I bought a gorgeous wood early 1970s tang-safety Ruger M77 in 270 off GB for a steal and I spent this whole year working up some really good reduced recoil loads, so I think I'm going to carry that gun this year. But next year will be the year of the Kimber I think!

Sometimes those are the best kind of purchases!

Hope your new Kimber is a real tack driver and makes for some great hunting memories for you for many years to come!

Thanks! I don't have super high expectations in the accuracy department. It's 5.5lb walnut stock rifle with a light-sporter profile barrel. I expect the barrel will be whippy and will heat up pretty fast, but if I can get it shoot 1 to 1.25MOA, then I will consider myself very happy. I think I might even start out by going with the Hornady Custom Lite ammo with the 120gr SST bullet and see how those group. I don't want to shoot it too much until I get a Leupold scope for it though. The rings have a big Leupold logo on the top and that just doesn't look good to me with a Nikon scope underneath. :)

Nice find. You mentioned the 257 Roberts in your first post. A friend I hunted with for a long time gave me a Ruger tang safety 1960's vintage in a 257 Roberts. It now wears a Leupold VXi-3 4.5-14 50mm. It a great shooter. You need a 257 Bob,keep looking and you have legitimate excuse to by one:evil:

I already have one 257 Roberts. It’s a brand new, unfired Ruger No.1 RSI with gorgeous wood. I just can’t bring myself to shoot it, much less carry it in the woods.

I have Kimber 84m’s in both 7mm/08 and 257 Roberts. The 257 is a select grade. They are both fine rifles. I love the weight. They are a joy to carry and they sure don’t hurt your eyes looking at them.
