On one of my FB classified pages a guy wants to trade his Vz 58 for an AR. Before I go through with it I am obviously doing my research.

I asked the gentleman if it is a Czech made Vz 58 (czechpoint/dtechnik) or a CAI Vz 2008. He said it was Czech made and that the magazines are surplus. I am going to go out and meet him in a few hours to make the trade. But I would like to be sure before I drive 40 minutes and waste gas money for nothing.

One thing that stands out to me is the muzzle brake. It appears to be the AK type that are found on CAI products since the Vz 2008 has a "US legal" barrel length and is threaded to accept other devices. He also has a bayonet which I don't think Czechpoint ones can accept.

Which brings me to another concern not about manufacturer. If this is an imported rifle and these modifications were made, doesn't this violate 922r or other federal law? Even if the old muzzle device was removed and another welded on? Also wouldn't the magazines need to have US parts in them? I know the easiest thing to do is swap the piston and furniture. I haven't seen a Czechpoint with the wood infused bakelite furniture for awhile either.

Someone who is more knowledgeable on this subject help me out please! I am just concerned that it may not be Dtechnik manufactured (which is what I want) and if it is that it owning it might end me up in Club Fed.

**I see that the new Czechpoint rifles have a 16.15'' Lothar Walther barrel with a threaded muzzle device. I guess he could have swapped out the furniture for the bakelite. Argh this is so confusing. I'm not sure if the seller really knows what he has, but had knowledge of the ammo he shot through it. I am just used to being skeptical of other people and their items I guess... :sigh:

It is Century VZ2008 which has AK slant brake with LH threads. VZ58 would be RH threads and would not take AK brake.

Call back...and ask specifically or have him send pictures of what's stamped on the receiver, clearly would indicate actually who built the rifle. If it's a vz2008 not worth all the hassle you have to go through to get it....hell I would not trade any ar15 for a vz2008.

I don't know of anyone who has had an issue with a VZ2008 in the last 12-18 months or so but if it is an older Century you might have issues including the Gremlin. I'm very happy with mine.

the barrel length and slant brake look like a Century to me.

This is what I was afraid of. Trying to get back into contact now. Definitely would never trade an AR for a 2008 either.

**Yep, he sent me more pics. Turns out it is a Century. I was happy to pass along some firearms knowledge to him though, and really happy I didn't have to use any gas!

Your AR, if in good condition, and by a reputable maker, is probably worth 25% more than than the VZ2008

Also, its some extra coin to put a red dot on the VZ

keep the AR

If you needs some extra oomph, add a 300BLK barrel to your AR
The 300 and the 7.62x39 are very similar in ballistics

Or just build an upper in 7.62x39, I built one and was surprised how accurate it was shooting tulammo and wolf.
