Unusual LEO sidearms?

Have you ever seen or heard of a LEO carrying a sidearm that was odd, or not common for their department?

A local police sergeant carried (he's retired now) a stainless Beretta 92, where all other patrol officers carry Glocks here.

My grandfather told me of a time when he was up in the northern part of the state and he ran into a sheriff's deputy that was carrying a cutdown single-shot 12 gauge My grandfather asked him why he didn't have a revolver, and the deputy said he sold it cuz he needed money

I used to carry a personally owned Colt Commander, while the rest of my agency carried S&W 5906s. Well, except for the boss, who always carried a J-frame.

Just the other night, I noticed a deputy carrying a Walther PPK/S as his primary/only handgun. I asked about that, and he said that carrying anything heavier hurt his back. When I commented on the relatively lackluster performance of .380, he said, "Well, I wouldn't want to be shot by one."

My PPK is presently riding in a Bianchi paddle holster which would make a very nice duty holster. In fact I believe it is listed in the Duty/Service section in their catalog. Also think there is a belt version of the same holster.

Plenty of duty holsters available for the PPK since it was designed as a duty weapon. I think Don Hume also has duty holsters for the PPK series guns.

Friend of mine used to work for Anahiem PD in So Cal. Carried a revolver in 45 Long Colt. Used to say he did it just to cheese the brass and the armorer who had to supply practise ammo.

Last time in was in DC, about 3-4 years ago, saw a US Capitol Police officer carrying a H&K P-7M13.

I met a Homicide detective who worked for the Compton, Calif., P.D., who carried a S&W Model 57 4" barrel .41 Magnum. He carried a BUG S&W J frame .38 Spec. His partner carried a Colt's Govt. Model .45 ACP.

when my department was issuing S&W M-15, i carried a Combat Commander

when they upgraded to the M-13, i carried a HK P7 and then a Sig 226

when the department became an exclusive Sig department, i had enough time on to continue carrying a Beretta 96.

it was worth it just to tick off the range staff...to add insult to injury, i always brought 10 mags (so never had to reload during qualification) and usually shot Master (so they couldn't carp about not switching to a sig)

I'm sure This would qualify. Walther also sells the same holster but in a paddle version which I'm not sure would qualify.

I saw an officer on the CU campus a few weeks ago with a cocked & locked Colt Gold Cup.

I saw a cop carrying a Sig Sauer P230 as a primary w/o spare mags on the belt! (long story) I saw a cop carrying a 1911 pattern with pimped out Mexican style silver or pewter grips. This was in SoCal like 2 years ago. I'm surprised the PD allowed such grips on a duty gun.

Very rarely a revolver such as the aformentioned 25-5 can still be seen on a LE duty belt.

He didn't. Just a regular brown leather holster, on his regular brown leather belt. Deputy Sheriff, here, out West.

Goes along with his boots and his Stetson, I guess.

Bailiff for a local judge carried a Hi Point 9mm. One drug detective I worked with back in the day carried a matched pair of Smith 49's.

Had a deputy in my hometown that carried a 3" J frame as his primary with no reloads. Not that my hometown was particularly dangerous, but most of the other deputies carried 1911s and/or Glocks.

One part time Dept I worked for had a guy that carried a .357 mag Desert Eagle for awhile. Someone eventually said something to him and he switched off to a .45 Baby Eagle after that. That's about the oddest I've seen so far.

Several years ago in a small town police dept near here, one officer carried a Colt 1991 cocked and locked, while the rest were carrying S&W autos (don't know the model, they were 45s).

A friend was a part-time cop in a small New Hampshire town a few years back...the chief said that the officers had to carry a 9mm but it could be any 9 they wanted (they had to supply their own pistols).

My friend carried a Steyr GB.

How's that for unusual?

that guy should not be on the streets.

For as much as that fellow spent on his pretty PPK, he could have gotten a better defensive weapon. A PPK's advantage is its concealability; much better duty weapons can be had for the same price.
