Upgrade<$350

I bought a Ruger10/22 but it seemed a little light weight in terms of a rifle that would bring down a small deer respectfully. So I'm pondering the realms of Remington, CZ, Weatherbey. Basically I'm interested in a descrete, bolt action, reasonable magazine, Accutrigger or adjustable, 6 ish lbs., .270ish.cal. I'd like to stay near $350. Can I buy a premium rifle for less than $400. Looking to camp and treck and near my cabin and hunt for food a couple times a week. Should I shop through a High Road Sales forum?

Savage/Stevens rifles are available at some very good prices, I have heard of Stevens 200s for $200, Savage 110s with a scope for $350, these are new prices.
Walmart and the other big box sporting goods stores are having after hunting season sales now and some great buys are out there now, just go look.

If you can find them, the Charles Daly field grade Mauser is $350. And it is a heck of a gun for that price. But unfortunately, CD will no longer be importing them, Remington will. And it sounds like they are only going to offer higher grades, at a rate of 10% higher than CD was. Good luck

"...Can I buy a premium rifle for less than $400..." Nope. Not BNIB. Used maybe. There's nothing wrong with buying a used rifle. You could look at a milsurp in decent condition too.
The Savage 110 package lists at $556.00. So a used one may well be sold around $350. An NEF/H&R Handi-rifle may be an idea. http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=4&subcat=6
"...a rifle that would bring down a small deer respectfully..." Not only too light, but it's illegal to hunt deer with a rimfire in most places.
An 18 or 20 inch 20 gauge pump shotgun would be ok for stooging around in the bush.
"...Accutrigger..." Is a Savage trade mark. Other maker's rifle don't have it. Most modern commercial hunting rifle have adjustable triggers though.
"...Remington, CZ, Weatherby..." Not ever for $350.
Just remember that you cannot hunt anything, anywhere without a licence. Or out of season. Usually nothing but varmints all year. A ground hog is a varmint, hence no season. Ditto for coyotes. usually. Check the local laws.

I don't know where you are located but I am pretty sure that would be illegal in all 50 states of the US. Hunting deer with a rimfire is usually frowned upon as inhumane.

My local Wal-Mart has a Savage 300 Win Mag, Marlin 30-30 and a Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm Mag priced in the $350 range.

i dont know what part of the country you live in but here in houston all the above ones i mentioned you can get for 400 bucks every day at more thana couple of places.

All of that for less than $400 NIB? Might be kinda hard to do. If you dont mind losing the magazine, I hear good things about the new NEF single shot rifles (we sell them for ~$220-230, I am sure MSRP is a bit higher). As far as Savages go, we usually have the 110x* combo with scope for about $450, and the Rem 710 combo for about $370. I recommend the 110x* for the money--smoother action and a slightly better scope. Thats my personal opinion though, and I am sure you will hear contrary to it.

It can be done but not---on demand or without doing a few things yourself.

Case in point----My ugly duckling has become a swan:

NIB Winchester Black Shadow Model 70 .30-06 from Walmart---clearanced at $150 employee discount took it home for $135.

Scope and mounts were ditched to find a home on a .22 or something---whatever--- its a junk Simmons scope.

Anyway--Leupold aluminium bases from Walmart $7
Weaver 4x4 rings from Walmart $17

Purchased a Winchester walnut stock from CDNN years ago---was so long ago I can't remember what I paid for it---but want to say $50 to $70.

The stock didn't have sling studs but was inletted for it----picked up a set of Uncle Mikes stainless ones at the local gunshop bargain bin for $3.

Winchester trigger guard from Midway for $30 + Williams polished blue steel floorplate for $50---The Winchester floorplate was cheaper---but out of stock and I didn't want to wait---so got the more expensive one.

Package of stainless steel washers to shim the floorplate-.83 cents from Walmart----used one washer.

$135.00
7.00
17.00
70.00
3.00
30.00
50.00
1.00

Total $313.00 plus any taxes or shipping.

Have a silver Ziess scope laying around---might look funny on a blued rifle---but oh well.

Will post pics when I get around to scoping her up and adjusting the trigger.

a decent gun or really nice used , problem is then you have to spend a couple hundred on a nice scope

Brand new Savages are going for under $400 typically with a scope. Check Hell-Mart and K-mart for sales and clearances, as well as Big 5, Acadamy, or Gart sports if you have any of those. Then there is always something used, you can find 270's and 30-06's all day long at pawn shops and gun shops, used in decent condition, for less than that.

rageman, the savage package is 329 everywhere here, the remmy pacakge is max 299, every day in houston at academy , oshmans, gander mnt, everywhere you go.

Wal Mart Savage Package Series 111FCXP3 270 $336.56

Go for the Savage package, especially if you can get it with the accu-trigger. Besides that try Gunbroker.com. I recently purchased a Weatherby Vanguard with a Simmons 3x9x40 in .270 for $310. I am very happy with the rifle and killed a doe with it in late December.

Keep it coming

I've done all my homework on the licensing for various game in wash. state. don't you worry. I'm just speaking in terms of hunting small game with the versatility of being able to hunt on a grander scale permits and seasons allowing. Gpa is sending me his old M1 Springfield, single shot, WWII, Uncle maybe a remy .270 pump, so the smaller rifles are attractive to me. I'll have Sm.Md.Lg. maybe but I favor a more sleak and surly rifle to the 10/22 I had for a while. I'll look up some of your suggestions. I'm glad to say some of the recs are some I've been researching.

quality rifle under $350.00

I just purchased a Stevens 200 from WalMart. The price was $268.change. Out the door price was around $292.00. I'm very satisfied with it. A while back Bass Pro had Stevens 200 rifles in .270 and .30-06 for $200.00 plus tax. If you aren't in a big hurry, just watch for sales and get one.
Good luck.

Tom:) :)

Stevens Model 200

Well, I just looked at a Stevens Model 200 for $255.00 at a local gun store. Was told it's basicly a savage 110 without the accutrigger...

I came home and called Savage Arms technical folks, and they confirmed that it IS THE Savage 110 action and receiver.

I'm aware of Savages reputation for being accurate out of the box, but I did not like the Stevens stock. It did not feel at all like the Savage stock. The savage stock felt better made, and was a bit more refined and cleaner. call me fickle...
