Should I Buy This Rifle/Scope ? - Range report

Hi everybody! I just walked into my local gun dealer and perused the rifle selection. Guess what i found. A Remington 740 30'06. It's in nice/used condition. However, sitting atop it in a cool looking, odd type scope mount is a like new Leupold Vari X III 1.5-5x20. I looked at the tag, and price said $350 for the combo. I left the store thinking about it. Well, i called the dealer and asked if that price was firm, and the owner said that the consigners bottom line was $275.00:what: . So, here is my question: Should I buy both the rifle and scope for $275.00 ? I'm thinking yes, but input would be wonderful!:)

And you're waiting for what? Christmas, and Santa to bring you one for free? Heck yeah, buy the combo and sell the rifle (assuming all is well with the scope).

A new Vari-X III is worth that.

You could buy both, and sell off the rifle if you don't want the rifle. Those old Woodsmasters are cool, though. I'd keep it.:)

The only thing wrong with your post is where you said you left the store thinking about it. It should have read "I left the store with this cool Rem 30-06 and Leupold scope combo."

Heck, I will give you $100.00 & shipping for the 740 sight unseen

YES. Stop wasting time posting on the forum and go to the store...

I just called the shop and had them hold it for me until i can purchase it tomorrow. How much do you guys think that scope would go for on Ebay? I may sell the scope and keep the rifle. I did get a sob story from the store owner about how the seller is a poor widow and such. Guess what i told the owner. "I won't lie to you, i'm probably gonna sell the combo seperately and nearly double my money". I may keep the rifle though. I think a semi-auto 30-06 with an aftermarket 10rd mag would be kinda cool.

I'd keep the scope, personally. It's a nice scope.

...unless you already have 3 nice scopes, I guess...

DOH! You might have just flubbed this one up.

Any bets when he gets there tomarrow it is either gone or priced up to the ~$500.00 it should have been?

Let us know, and pics are a must.

ID_shooting: Price will be the same. I'm a long time customer of this shop and i'm on a first name basis with the owner. Actually, the owner has known me since i was about 14 years old and even sold me handgun ammo at that age. ( I'm 21 now). Lets just say this shop has "bent" the rules for me before.:)

I know I'm piling on, but I'd definitely buy it. I'm always on the lookout for deals like that. Even if you don't want either, you could break up the package and sell the rifle and the scope separately on Gunbroker ... and increase your kitty for something you really want. Me? I'd buy it, sell the rifle, and keep the scope.

What? You're not going at least 4x over the legal speed limit on your way to the shop right now ? ? ? ? ? With cash/plastic in hand?

A Leupold VX III Scope costs more than $275.
but this is a VariX III. Slightly different. Still a deal.

Nothing like give the Brady bunch some ammo.

I just got back home with it. $300.00 OTD with 2 mags and a nice leather sling. I'll get pics up in a little while. ( I'd take pics now, but i gotta go and do this little thing called WORK ).:cuss:

I know I am not the first nor the last to say this...but I would seriously think about keeping BOTH!

Why sell somthing when you can keep it and mebbe later trade out with somthing you REALLY want...and until then, you have a nice rifle to take to the range?

Lucky man.

If you sell the scope, just remember that the VariXIII is not a VXIII - it's really a VXII. The VariXIII was updated to include index-matched lenses and called the VXIII, and the unmodified VariXIII begat the VXII. (Well, in honesty, Leupold actually tried deleting the multi-coating on the inner lens elements from the VariXIII to make the VXII line, but had to revert the VXII line back to the full VariXIII specs after Burris and Nikon came out with fully-multi-coated glass for all lens elements in their mid-range products.)

Here are a few pics of my new toy. Rifle is in very nice condition for a 1950's model. There are little scratches and discolored places here and there, but zero rust or pitting. Wood is also in great shape, only a few dings and dents, no cracks. Entire rifle looks to be all origional. I don't think the wood or metal has been refinished. Scope is clear and good as new.

Sweet! Nice deal, and that looks like a great shooter. Thanks for sharing the pics. And yup, keep 'em both until you find something you want to trade or deal on.

Jackal,

Great deal.

Never had a 740, but the 742 in .30-06 I had for a while (my dad won it in a raffle) was the biggest non-zero-holding rifle I have ever shot. Seems like all I ever did was sight in that sucker, every time I took it out it shot somewhere else. It had a good old steel tube El Paso Weaver K4 on it in Weaver rings and base, solidly mounted, and the scope did fine on other rifles. So 'scuse my prejudice against the semiauto Remingtons, other models or individual examples may do OK but that one soured me on them. BTW, forget about turning it into some sort of SHTF makeshift battle rifle. It'll heat up really fast with rapid fire, even with 5-round magazines. And no, I never did that to the one I had either.

But that's a really good scope, you oughta keep it...

Ya, i question this scope mounting set-up's reliability. It's some sort of Pachmayr side-tipping mount.( Scope folds out of way to allow irons to be used.) I'm cleaning right now, ill post back for range report tomorrow.

Well, if the scope doesn't hold zero, the irons should be fine. They're on the barrel.
