Upset with Gandermountain

that was $35/20 vs $28/50, right?

That's been my experience with gander mountain prices, as well.

A few weekend, a cousin and I decided to go skeet shooting. He called from gander mountain asking what kind of shells to be and how many. I gave him the specs and told him to just grab $xxx worth of the cheapest bird or target shot they had. I picked up the same amount from walmart, and ended up with roughly %75 more rounds than he did. He was super mad. Not only that, I bought Winchesters, he bought gander branded stuff. The same spec shells wouldn't cycle my semi auto 1100's with the gander brand. Even their clothes are overpriced, you can find the same brands elsewhere, cheaper. The fishing stuff is overpriced, but again...when I'm in a pinch I need it now and Gander is there to gouge my needy self. I try to avoid them, but it doesn't always work. I'd rather support a local gun shop or tackle shop instead of a corporate giant like Gander or Cabela where my $$$$ doesn't go back into my local community.

The only time I go to Gander is to pick up a rifle and feel it in the store, then buy it online or order it from a true "local" gun store. Either that, or buying cleaning supplies that walmart doesn't carry and I don't want to justify $5-10 shipping for under $20 worth of stuff.

from searcher451 (post 21) :
Why be upset with the entire operation instead of a single clerk who didn't have all the facts
Maybe the OP jumped the gun a little or has had bad service from them many times before and just blew. Regardless, the abundance of posters who are backing up his gripe rather proves he was correct in his assumption don't you think?

After all of the WalMart, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, and Dick's suck at life threads we have had over the years I am still surprised that people continue to shop there.

Well, Gus, it's probably that we here at THR are eternally hopeful that we'll run into that super-duper, close-out price on the exact .30 cal., auto-loading, premium grade walnut, stainless steel, braked, flash-hider equiped Wham-Doozle that we've been wanting all our lives for (or for the past 3 minutes, anyway).

I can only vouch for myself and the fact that I refuse to be ripped off. I think that if the entire nation were as opposed to taking it up the you know what as some of us are, we'd live in a very different America. However, this is not the case and entities like Gander are still doing fairly well. It will catch up with them though as people tend to wake up after some time.

Just look at the damage Netflix and Redbox has done to Blockbuster. And both had been around for years before they started doing serious damage. It was like people woke up one morning and thought, "Hey I can rent this at Blockbuster for $5 or I can go to Redbox and pay 99ç. Hmmm...I think I'll go to redbox."

Werewolf, you realize that was $35/20 vs $28/50, right?

Yep but I figured $35 for 20 had to be a typo since the going rate is around $17 or so for 20 9mm Hydrashoks right now. Who in their right mind would sell them for double that and expect to get it. $35 for 50 seems reasonable and is a discount against the $17 for 20 (40 for $34 +10 rds for free) but still more expensive than the $28 speak quoted for 50 (I'd like to know where he found that price).

I wish but nope.

As stated, Gander Mountain

I'd like to know where he found that price.

There are a couple of sites that I've used and granted they are rare. The first big order was cheaperthandirt.com. The actual price was $23.76 per 50 rounds. I made a $300+ order and the shipping for the entire order (fairly heavy due to Federal Power Shok 12ga slugs and buckshot) was $21.47 and I got the order 2 days later. Wouldn't make it up...still have the invoice. So...yeah...I still stand with the previous statement about Gander and where they may bestow affections towards me.

was with my bud at Gander mountin and spied 2 1898 Chile Mausers on a rack. The first was 100% matching (including stock), bore had deep groves, the crest was deep, and it Had its cleaning rod. Is a 7MM Mauser and about 80% blue on the rifle. The other one was crap. Non matching rusty and all in all junk. They were both $199 each.
I got the better one. After the sales man there finally realized I wanted to buy a gun after telling him while he was on the phione with some friend, Another sales guy came up and told him to get off the phone and he got the paper work for me to fill out. They brought a different Chili Mauser in a box after I asked for one they had out. The didn't seem to want to sell it. The one he brought out was somewhat matching but bad looking wood. He reluctantly got the one I wanted and called it in and all. I hadn't bought a gun in a while from GM and I remembered whey. Finally got out of that unfriendly place with my #18th gun for the year.

Not excusing bad service, and there is no excuse for telling someone you have an item that you don't have. I HATE that with a great big purple passion. It usually means whoever was on the phone with you was to lazy to walk out to the isle in question and lay their eyes on the shelf in question. There is no excuse for that. It is by definition the job those clerks are paid for.

But, I just took the NRA RSO course that was held at the Gander Mountain in Spring TX, and I figure that they let the guy put on the course for free in a facility that they have to pay for whether it's used or not year in year out so they can't be all bad. Don't get me wrong I know they do it for promotional purposes, but I profited a 100 + course for 50 so I just don't see a problem with them.

Heck, I picked up a pair of shoes while I was there for a good price. Now granted a lot of the stuff I looked at was more money than I was willing to pay, but hey let the free market work. I bought what I wanted from them, and bought ammo the next weekend at the gun show from a different vendor.

No problem, and no reason to get upset.

As I said, I've been on both sides of the counter.

I've tracked down a product for someone on the phone only to find they had hung-up when I returned to the phone.

On the other-side
I've had ask a saleperson who was answering questions to someone on the phone: "I'm here in front of you with money in my hand, do you want to sell something or talk on the phone?"

Back in February, I let a deal slip through my hands. Gander in Thornton, CO had their 50 series Liberty safes on sale and were offering the usual 10% military/LEO/emt/fire discount on top of the sale price. I could have saved about $700 off of the best price anywhere that that particular safe sells for. Oh well.

People shop at big box stores for the low prices and then complain about the service?
I realize mom n pop gun shops can and often do offer sub par customer service. But that is their own darn fault. They have every opportunity to knock the big box stores off the map through offering good service. Why they don't is anyone's guess.
