Looking at a used Ruger Red Label 12 ga. at a local shop. Would be used primarily as an upland hunting gun for Grouse, Pheasant, Rabbit & some light sporting clay shooting. The gun's serial # indicates it was built in 1985. It's in excellent condition. A few barely noticeable 'character' marks on the stock & forearm. The stock fits me absolutely perfectly (which is why I was drawn to it). It's a 26" w/ fixed chokes (Mod top / IC bottom) - which doesn't really matter to me. Anway, they're asking $800. Which is what others I've seen are going for. Tell me why I should or shouldn't get it. ( I can't get it out of my head!)

Personally I've never needed more than a 20 for the type of shooting you describe but to each their own.The Red label is a nice shooter if I was gonna spend that much though I'd look around for a 101.Good luck and enjoy the journey

Such a deal! Grabit NOW! The older blued receiver models are the best. I owned and used one for 20+ years but sold it because of financial reasons. Regetted it to this day.:banghead:Don't let The Ruger bashers get to you! It is truly a great American Made Shotgun.:D
My next Ruger Shotgun will be the All Weather Target Gray 12 w/28 " barrels. If you can handle the weight, go for it!

I have one of about the same vintage and I have always liked it.
This fall the bottom ejector stopped working so I sent it back to Ruger.
I had to wait a while,(3 months) but it came back fixed, and basically rebuilt to new standards.
Almost all new internals, reblued barrels, refinished forearm (where it had gotten a few marks over the years), new box and owners manual. All at no charge. I was a little peeved at first at its breaking but the service made up for it, especially on a 20 year old gun.

As others have said...

Ruger shotguns are very well built. You will enjoy it if or when you buy it.

I have 2 red labels, 1 in 20ga, and 1 in 12ga. I just love them.Nice looking, reliable, and (for me) extremely well balanced. Also, $800 is the best price I've ever seen one go for (granted, I've only ever seen 2 for sale in person though).I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Another vote for Ruger Over and Under. Mine is a Woodside, 3 chokes, 26 inch "skeet barrel". Solid as they come, beautiful furniture attached. Trap and skeet shoot all day at the club. They have appreciated in value significantly since I purchased mine.
