i read posts about the different powders. i have used 2400 for 35 years; with good results. however, i have recently tried 296. loading 210 grain jhc from sierraa has given me 3-5 inch groups at 100 yards-pretty impresive. 2400 woulf put 2 closer together; but would always have the last shot string off hor or ver. i still load both for more study. 24 grs 2400, 26 grs. 296. RH 7.5 brl.

have an 8-3/8 629 and love it but the new toy takes the mos attention right now. RH has scope 629 does not . have driver's license problem WHERE IT SAYS DATE OF BIRTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a big fan of W296/H110 but only for full power magnum loads since it does not react well when downloaded. 2400 is a time tested magnum powder but IMO some the newer powders are more efficient.

I load most of my handgun ammo with 3 powders, W231(HP-38), W540(HS-6) and W296(H110) as opposed to the original powder trinity, Bullseye, Unique and 2400.

Welcome to the forum...

Glad 296 is working for you. Have you ever tried imr4227?

Love that 296, especially during night shoots for demo purposes. I always use a magnum primer, and a strong crimp.

You may want to experiment with AA #9 and N105 when loading 200/210gr JHPs, more so if you have a 4".

try switching primers on that 2400 load.

Alliant, manufacturer of 2400 recommends against the use of magnum primers with this powder. Just sayin'.

Altho I use H110/W296 in a majority of my magnum handgun loads, I've found that IMR4227 gives excellent results in .44 mag, especially in my long pipe revolvers and carbines.

AA#9 is like 2400 in that you can load down. The only problem with #9 is that there have been reports of lot to lot variation. That's what caused me to try Ramshot Enforcer. It can also be loaded down but at max pressure it will deliver velocity as high as H110/W296. If you have a Lyman Pistol & Revolver III or a 49th edition take a look at the data for Enforcer. The data from www.ramshot.com is good but it's limited to 35,000 PSI. I use Enforcer for all of my magnum handgun loads. ;)

Ahh, love that 296/H110! But as already posted on this powder, it does require magnum primers, and doesn't react well to being down loaded. But as magnum powders go, it is among the best for full house loads. Good tight roll crimps and magnum primers, and H110 / 296 will treat you right.

gentlmen i only reload the best for max loads. i have played with primers in all my rifle and pistol loads. i start at powder max then use reg and mag primers. i shot a 3 inch group with my RH sunday. 2 6 gr 296- then 2400 at 24 gr; it shot 4.5. iit could be me at the time. i back down off of max 2 tenths at each session using all primers for the caliber being tested. ruger #1s are beautiful but will not shoot.BULLLLLLL!!! it took me 73 variants to nail it down! it came out to be 51.5 gr 4350 with 110gr accubond using fed GMM primers. i play with all my calibers this way in order to get the best groups with them all using imr4350(pitching pennies for gas broke) naw i just love 4350.
