USP like safety/decocker on 1911?

Is the USP like safety & decocker on the 1911 design a good idea?

I like the safety/decocker design on the H&K's. But if you put one on a 1911, then it is not a 1911 to me. I like both designs, just don't want that type safety on my 1911's

Not hardly. Why would you want to decock a 1911? On the HK, that makes sense, since it has a double action trigger, but a feature to render a gun unfireable, but still dangerous? Why?

Even though I love the Safety and decocker feature of the USP and love the action of the 1911. I don't think they should be mixed into one action.

The action of cocking a hammer to me is just as fast as fliping off a safety and it is something you have to intentionally do rather than accidentally disingageing. Not all decockers on SA only guns double as a safety. Some SA have only the decocker only and no safety. Thus, the hammer itself is your safety mechanism. Also, many SA decockers are on the slide rather than the frame which makes it difficult to accidentally thumb the decocker with the normal grip. Personally, I like having to cock the hammer rather than disengage a safety.

JonClark,

Welcome to the forum. It is always good to have new members, especially those with enthusiasm for a pistol many of the members are not familiar with. However, did you really mean to say...

many SA decockers are on the slide rather than the frame

Is there another single action pistol, other than your Radom, that has a slide mounted decocker? Have any of those been manufactured in the past 60 years?

JTQ,
Yes, good catch. I should simply say not all SA only decockers are on the frame. The others I can think of off hand other than the Radom Vis are the S&W model 52 and 952. Those are both SA only with Decocker on slide. The 952 is expensive, but has great reviews and was an S&W performance center gun. I use the Radom example because even though it is a rarity, you are more likely to shoot one of those than a 952. If I think of any other SA only with slide decockers, I will mention them.

It would be a redundancy if you carry "cocked and locked." There is no reason to decock it except for unloading and cleaning, neither of which will have any round in the chamber if you did your job.

The same argument could be made on the other side of the coin. I you have a decocker, carrying a gun cocked and locked is the redundancy and there is no need for a safety on an SA only gun. The decocked hammer/half cocked is now your safety. When you are ready to shoot, just cock the thing and it is just as easy as flipping off the safety. It is practically the same as cocked and locked in my mind.

Not always. Imagine a 1911. What is easier to do? Swipe the safety off on a cocked and locked 1911 or cock the hammer with the safety off to fire? I am not sure about you but I have to change my grip angle slightly to reach the hammer on a 1911. On some SA guns you really do NEED a safety. I have an AMT backup which is SA. It does not have an exposed hammer so there is no way to cock the hammer to get it to fire as part of the safety. It does however have a grip safety and an interesting thumb safety, not 1911 style.

JonClark welcome to the forum. The 1911 is a HOT topic so most people who own a 1911 prefer the original design or existing designs. Then you have the 1911 double stack (Para USA, etc) and finally the STI 2011. The design should be on newer platforms.

Vulcan71,
Yes, I find that both 1911 and hi-power fans are very passionate about their guns design and will defend it to the death. I own several hi-powers and a 1911 and like them fine. Having a favorite gun is a very personal choice based on the design and what you like. I just happen to like an SA only with the decocker rather than a safety. Unfortunatly, there are not many guns that meet that discription..... Which is why I am a fan of the Radom Vis. If anyone ever gets a chance to fire one, try it out. The design is based on a cross between the 1911 and Hi-Power...... So you can't go too wrong there.
