I was handling a HK USP 45 today and noticed that the slide release is too far forward for me to trip with my thumb. In your opinion, what is the most effictive way to chamber a round? Grab the slide and pull it back and let go? Try the slam the mag in trick? Or is there a way to trip the release without my thumb? Thanks!!!
-Mike

if you shoot with two hands, try using your left thumb to release while you're about to line up the sights. I can reach my USP45 release with my thumb.
I'd like to see pics how you hold yours.

Thanks for the responce. I shot nothing but my dad's Colt Woodsman for years and always (and probably incorrectly) used my right hand to trip the slide release and then grabed the gun with both hands and took aim. It never even occured to me to try that way. Thanks for the info!!! :)

For me, I pull back on the slide to chamber a round. weakhand overhand grip on the rear of the slide and rack hard to chamber the round. Practicing tap-rack-bang / tap-rack-access drills got me used to chambering that way so that's what I've stuck with.

yeah he got used to tap/rack/bang with his 1911, a habit carried over to his HK now :D The only thing I'd tap/bang is chicks with big racks, not my HK. :) several different HK's, thousands of rounds over years, never had to tap/rack/bang with any of them!

Play around some more with it, you'll find your best way to release the slide quickly after you reload.

I can reach it with my right thumb, but it's a bit of a stretch. When I'm in a hurry I put in a new mag and, as I'm rotating my left hand into place, I hit the slide release with that thumb.

I have large thumbs, but I still can't reach the slide release of a USP45 without shifting my grip.

Not sure about on a USP, but on my Glock I've always just "boomeranged" the slide by just pulling straight back on the slide and letting it move all the way forward.

safety's on. besides, this is educational purposes.
anyway, as i was illustrating, you can line up your sights at the target, get the trigger ready while reload. fast :D

I have a USP Compact. I've grown to really enjoy the Slam-Bam-ThankyouMam mag insertion. Then you don't have to worry about slide release levers or pulling the slide back. Let your HK do the work for you.

.

I am somewhat disturbed at the notion of buying a firearm that I could
not fully operate in the intended manner.

:scrutiny:

If you can't reach the lever, perhaps the pistol is not the best choice for you.

I slingshot the slide with my left hand most of the time. It's the easiest method with cold or gloved hands (Minnesota).
I also practice shifting my grip slightly to release it with my right thumb in case it becomes necessary.
