Value Assesment for Colts

My grand father has some beutiful early 70's pre-ban Colt AR-15's in PERFECT condition. One is a normal looking M-16 type while the other looks like the newer types with 2 position collapseable stock and shorter front handgaurd. He also has 2 Colt MKIV .45 ACP (Series 7, 8) that are near perfect. He said that they are likely to be passed down to me when the time comes around. I have absolutely NO intent on selling these when i do recieve them, I'm just curious of how much they would best go for.

He also has an IMI Uzi S/A SMG but im not gonna go into details about that except the fact that its heavier than both his AR's and My AK combined

Lucky you! Those are very nice forearms to inherit. They should have plenty of market value to match their sentimental value.

I'm not up on Colt values, but it sounds like you have an SP1 and probably an SP1 carbine there (going by the two position stock). Both of those would have 1/12 twist lightweight barrels. SP1 rifles aren't all that uncommon, however unmolested SP1 carbines are.


Does the rear sight on the carbine have small and large apertures with an elevation adjustment, or just a simple flip sight with no elevation drum like the rifle? (ie. an A1 or A2 upper?)

Definitely research these and ask over at ar15.com, there's a lot of immaturity over there, but once you squelch out the noise, it's a goldmine of technical and historical info.

I remember the SP1 from looking at the reciever... but on the right side of the rear sight there is a round knob with numbers if i remember right... and the carry handle/rear sight is fixed, non removeable

The earlier and lighter A1 style upper has only a windage adjustment (You have to use a tool or the tip of a bullet to turn it). Also notice the lightening cut under the rear sight. These uppers come with(later) and without(earlier) the forward assist button. Nobody makes rifles with these uppers anymore so they are more desirable.

The later, more complicated A2 upper has a elevation drum under the sight and a knob to adjust windage. The rear aperture itself also has a larger ghost ring for close range and low light use.

That narrows it down. Someone here or definately on AR15.com should be able to give you an approximate value.

You could also Google search for Colt SP1 and SP1 carbine. Auction Arms and Gunbroker.com might have something you could compare to also.

I must warn you though, you are now obligated to purchase all the 1970's SWAT episodes on DVD and watch them at least once.

I admit that I don't have any working experience with the AR15 rifles, but I have seen them go for about $1,000 a piece, while the pistols go from $650-850 a piece in Ohio.
