Hi guys/gals,

I am all set to get a VEPR from Robinson Armament and have a few decisions to make before I place my order that you all can help with I'm sure.

I can't decide on the .223 caliber or the 7.62. I do alot of shooting at an outdoor range and the most distance I shoot is generally 100 yards. I want to be able to shoot alot so ammo price is a factor as well. Any reasons I should choose one over the other.

The next question I had was about the muzzle break. It is offered as an option on the VEPR rifles, but do I want one? Are they worth another $50 for the type of shooting I do?

Last thing is magazines. Where can I get some mags that fit these VEPR rifles? I sure don't want to keep reloading after 5 or 10 rounds, whatever they are gonna send me.

Thanks for any help offered.

Another thing to consider with the muzzlebreak-it makes the rifle look more EVIL.

Is it worth $50 to you to annoy Feinstein, Schumer, et al?

Muzzle break hell. I'd keep the muzzle naked. After the ban expires in september, I'd then have it fitted for a flashhider. Most AKs traditionally lacked a flashhider, but having one put on there wouldn't be difficult. :)

I love Veprs. I have a 7.62x39 and I'm going to be getting a .223 shortly.

If you are only doing slow fire plinking style stuff at the range then the muzzle brake is not really neccesary. Muzzle brakes are great at keeping your muzzle down while you are shooting fast, but you trade that off with increased noise. So if speed isn't really a need, skip the brake.

With good ammo, both are capable of very good accuracy for an AK type rifle. Cheap plinking 7.62x39 is around $80 a case and cheap .223 is around $100.

.223 recoils less and is flatter shooting. However for slow fire 100 yard shooting, both are really moot points.

For magazines, the 7.62x39 magazines are standard AK mags and are available everywhere for super cheap. The .223 mags are modified 5.45 magazines and will cost more and be harder to find.

Corriea summed it up nicely.

Mine is a 7.62x39 vepr K with the break. The noise isn't bad, and the recoil is no more than an AR's, IMO. If you want cheap mags and ammo, 7.62x39 is the way to go. It takes normal AK mags, which are cheap, and Wolf is cheap also.

Mine came in a cardboard box with English on one side, and Russian on the other. Rifle, manual, cleaning rod, brushes, and some other random tools/hardware were included. So was one 30rd mag. I think that was it.

I believe mine was packaged like ttbadboy described. I can't recall exactly what kind of magazine came with it however.

Get the 5.45x39 instead. Reliability of the 7.62, accuracy of the 5.56, ten cents a round for ammo, and new polymer 30rd mags for $8. What more could you want?

Good point. The 5.45 would be an awesome choice. Only problem is that they are the scarcest of Veprs. I've only ever seen one, and I visit Robarms pretty often. I would imagine your best bet would be to contact them directly and see if one could be sent to your local FFL. I don't think they get very many of the 5.45s from Russia.

I too want a VEPR

I am saving to get one. I'm going with .223 because it's common, and you can get better ammo than surplus 7.62. I like the naked muzzle look. Does the brake really make any difference at all? VEPRs are fairly heavy anyway. Do they make the drums in .223? Are 5.45 drums available?

It really depends on what you are looking for.

If you're into accuracy, I say go for the .223. The 7.62 x 39 is just not as accurate as the .223 round. If you want further accuracy, shoot the Fed or Win .223, more accuracy can be obtained vs. the Wolf.

As for the Ammo price, its about the same because the VEPR can shoot Wolf .223 all day long. The difference is about 20 dollars / 1k, not that much.

As for Mags, the .223 mags will cost a litte more but not by much. You basically pick up some EG bakelites for 5.00 each(advertised as exe cond, but the ones I received are new!), drop in a Robinson Arms .223 mag follower @ 6.00, plus a little dremeling and you're set to go @ around 11.00 per mag. PM me if you want to know where to buy the EG Bakelites for 5.00 each.

Just to put a twist on the VEPR, I've got a KTR-03V on order w/ Marc Krebs, it should be here anyday now. IMO, why Galil when you can KTR.

;)
