Like the title says I am very proud of my wife and would like to share it. Yesterday while in her English 101 class they had their monthly current events discussion, and of course someone wanted to talk about gun control. The professor decided to go with it as she is very much in support of it. Anyway she asked all the students to raise their hands if they owned guns, being in Alabama the majority did. She then asked if they owned more than one, a few hands went down. Then she asked who owned more than five, about five hands stayed up. As my wife was the only female who still had her hand up the professor decided she would be the easy target and laid into her.

Professor: “Why would anyone ever need that many guns?”

Wife: “Well I have one for carry, one on my nightstand, one in my home office, one for deer hunting, one for squirrel hunting, and an AR-15” teacher cuts her off.

Professor: “Why on earth would a woman need a fully automatic assault rifle?”

Wife: “First on of all it isn’t fully automatic, second it isn’t an assault rifle as it would have to be select fire to be one” teacher cuts her off again.

Professor: “Well that doesn’t matter, and your just avoiding the question.”

Wife: “No, I’m not, I am trying to educate the ignorant. And if I could finish I would answer your question. It’s because as a woman I never want to be overpowered and raped, especially in my own home.”

Professor: “But why would you ever need thirty rounds to defend yourself?”

Wife: “Because we live out in the middle of nowhere and the burglars are never nice enough to let us know when they will be there and how many there will be.”

Professor: “Well fine. How many guns do you own?”

    Wife: “Not enough.”

You're a lucky man. Glad she was able to educate the ignorant.

Though in general, and not as a jab at your wife, but any time we play the "why do you need" game, we're choosing to let the antis dictate terms.

"Need" is irrelevant. The only real answer to "why do you need____" is "Need has nothing to do with what property I choose to own and what rights I choose to excercise".

Well played. She is a smart one for sure! I like how she called the teacher ignorant without really saying you are ignorant. That was awesome!

    Calhoun in Huntsville right now.

I agree but overall I think she did a very good job.

She most definately is. Unfortunately she has to go to work about the time I get off today so we will celebrate tomorrow night.

You have no idea how true that is.

Noticed how the prof hit the same old tired talking points ... like "why would anyone need ..." and "Why on earth would a woman need ...".

I am proud of the stand your wife took. I hope she crumbled the walls in the professor's mind just a bit!

College... the place of open minds and higher learning.

Glad I'm already finished with all that.

When did you stop beating your wife/husband/girlfriend/children?

It's a loaded question (no pun intended). The question presumes that if you cannot prove need, then you cannot justify the gun. The question is irrelevant. Enshrined in our Constitution is the Bill of Rights. No one needs justification to exercise any of those rights. No one has to answer ANY of these questions:

Why do you need freedom of religion? Speech? Assembly? Press?
Why do you need a firearm?
Why do you refuse to accept Federal troops living in your home?
Why do you not want the police to search your home without a warrant and take whatever they want?
Why do you not want your local government to seize your home and give it to their buddies?
Why do you need a trial and a jury when you have committed a crime? Why do you need a defense attorney?
Why do you oppose your police torturing suspects?

ALL of these are protected by the Bill of rights, and require no answer or justification on the part of a citizen of the United States of America.

It would be nice to know what, if anything, her fellow students said to her after class.

Well to answer that she only talks to about 5 people in that class and 4 out of the 5 are Marines so you can guess how that was.
    I agree

Better watch out. Her English professor is just trying to find out who is a right wing gun nut and therefore who he should fail. Been there, done that. She'll learn real fast to pretend she's a commie when doing her homework assignments. I watched my papers go from C- to A in my "business ethics" class by doing that. Did I mention I got to watch Al Gore's climate change movie during programming class? Yeah, it's that bad. She'll learn. Good luck.

Actually I doubt it will make a lot of difference as this professor is pregnant and will be out for the rest of the semester starting March 1st. Don't know about the professor replacing her.
