I bought a new Taurus PT709 Slim 9mm last week and carried it for a week before I had a chance to fire it at the range. Little did I know I was carrying a single shot pistol with me the whole time! I discovered at the range that it has a defective extractor which causes the spent round to remain in the barrel after the gun is fired. Strangely, it operates normally when hand-cycling an entire clip through the weapon. I took it back to the dealer who said he’ll call me tomorrow after he has a chance to fire it. I’ve heard only negative comments about Taurus and now I believe them all! Don’t trust Taurus as a self defense weapon!

Not to bash you, but I think most people around here would say it is SOP to test fire your CCW with 100-200 rounds of your defensive cartridge of choice before you carry that firearm and cartridge combination.

I'm not a huge taurus fan. My first pistol was a taurus pt-22. Still have it but plan to give it away. I walked into a gun store last week and the owners were railing about taurus pistols being garbage. I will avoid taurus in the future.

Why did you carry a gun all week without function testing it? I got a sig a while back and am still shooting it at the range and becoming comfortable enough to trust my life with it. Im on 200 rounds and still have more to go.

Yes, that seems to be the theme! Live and learn. I was spoiled with my G19. Won't make the same mistake twice.

I can't think of anything high road to say about a first poster who would be dumb enough to carry a pistol for a week, that had not troubled himself to actually fire it first. I won't even go into that poster's credibility when it comes to condemning the whole company on the strength of it.

And it's a magazine, not a clip...

Dang! Don't be hate'n! Can't I share my mistakes with perfect strangers so they won't do the same? I pray for you.

I can't find it now, but someone posted the same pt709 problem on this forum and had pics of the the extractor that looked just like mine

As a multiple Taurus owner, I can state that I have never once had an issue with any of my Taurus handguns, revolvers nor autos. Yet, I have had to send my SA and S&W hand guns into the factory for repairs. Go figure.

Taurus is internet bandwagon bashing machine, but they don't deserve it anymore than any other manufacture.

Oh, crikey. I think there is a lot of folly in RealWinner's reasoning, but since several seasoned posters have already taken him behind the woodshed, I won't comment further.

Taurus garbage? Gimme a break. As with any firearm, a proper testing and breaking in period is critical. Anything less is just plain stupid. I have seen stellar Taurus and crappy S&W's and vice versa. Trashing one brand over another shows ignorance and brand elitism.

I guess you are just part of the lucky 10% of Taurus buyers that I've heard about. Congratulations, go out and buy a lottery ticket!

Forgot to mention the firing pin broke on my pt-22 after about 200 rounds. I mailed them the slide and they fixed it, but back when that was my sole pistol it surely was annoying.

"Anything mechanical is subject to failure."

Object lesson here.
Always test your weapon.
"Anything mechanical is subject to failure." That should be your maxim. It was something drilled into me by my father who was an engineer. He always said that machines are only as good as the people who made and maintained them. This applies universally regardless of brand.

Now the real question are:
Did you inspect our weapon before purchasing it?
Did you detail clean your weapon before loading it?
Did your perform a function check?

I'm not slamming you just running the the checklist that any mechanically inclined individual would perform.

Do a search on here and you'll find that Taurus has had a few extractor issues with the 709.

I LIKE Taurus!

I've been happy with EVERY Taurus gun I've ever owned, and I've got several of their semi-autos and revolvers.

The VERY first Taurus I ever owned was a PT-99, which I got used. The previous owner or somebody had polished the heck out of the feed ramp, and the shell casings were sort of ballooning out the side, near the rim. I sent a letter to Taurus explaining that I knew that they were not at fault and I was prepared to pay the full cost of repair, but they STILL fixed it for free, and they did it in just two weeks, out my door and back again.

The only complaint I had during the whole process was that when the gun was returned, even though the shipping bill said to get a signature from an adult, Fedex still left the box on my doorstep! But that wasn't the fault of Taurus!

OK! Got it! TEST YOR WEAPON! The fact remains that the weapon failed on the FIRST ROUND! Not the 100th or the 500th, but the FIRST round! And every round after.

More: I LIKE Taurus

...and ANOTHER thing:

At the last Shot Show in Orlando, the senior Taurus representative there listened to me talk about what I'd like to see them make. He listened to me, and REALLY listened, for the full 15 minutes that I wanted to talk, even though I was dressed in faded blue jeans and tennis shoes and he had guys in fancy coats and ties waiting to talk to him.

In my book, that's worth a lot.

As I said, I like Taurus.

Taurus junk?

I have one Taurus a PT92as. I'm not enamored with the 9mm, but I got this
gun anyway. It has never failed to function perfectly. I carry a 1911 and that is the gun I prefer. But I would not hesitate to carry and use it if I had
to. I figure 9mm is the round to have if the apocalypse comes. Just my 2 dongs worth.

OK. Now we really know that you learned your lesson.:D I had my Taurus problems also. It took two trips to Florida and one to my 'smith till it was straightened out, so I feel for ya and know your pain. On the other hand, my wife's Taurus 605 is just as good as my Smith. Good luck on the adventure you're about to embark on. BTW, did you give the firearm a good cleaning? I know my revolvers had more oil and gunk in them than my Dodge Ram holds. Could've gummed up your works some.
