I think we don't give our children enough credit. Most have a very natural ability to discern fact from fiction, reality from fantasy. Often, cartoons or video games that "adults" are offended by or deem unsuitable for children have no ill effect on kids. None. They just see it as entertainment and wonder why grown-ups make such a fuss. Much ado about nothing, truly.
Some of the video games are actually really good such as 'America's Army' where the gun handling is fairly realistic and you go to prison if you frag the DI at the firing range.
