There's a lot of very specialized and expensive equipment involved in the production of rimfire ammo. Yet people can't understand why companies just don't buy more equipment to increase production.

Got an e-mail this morning from alloutdoor.com linking to this very interesting post with a video of CCI manufacturing .22 Rimfire Ammunition. I found it quite interesting - hope you do too.

Sure did find it interesting, thanks for sharing il.bill

Pretty cool. Did I read correct somewhere CC I is no longer making minimags?? The video mentioned several rim fire rounds that receive the copper plating but it did not mention minimags

I have not heard that one. I just bought a dozen 100-round packs of CCI MiniMags from Palmetto State Armory for less than $8.00 each shipped this past week - that sale ends tomorrow, June 19.

The CCI factory is just down the road from where I live, I've been told they don't give public tours :(

Very cool and informative video! Always wondered how .22 rimfire ammo was made. Thanks to you now I know!

Neat video. My only complaint is that it is too short. They could spend a couple minutes on every step and turn it into a half an hour show.

Thanks for sharing.

You are absolutely correct, Canibul. I would venture to say some of that machinery was either built by CCI itself, or extensively tweaked by them after installation so that its not a question of going out to the fabricators and asking them to build another set of machines, because even if they did, what CCI received wouldn't work the way CCI needs it to work.

Probably not, but the wife and I toured CCI and Speer back in the early '80s, along with a couple of hundred other IHMSA shooters. The IHMSA International Competition was being held up north of Coeur d' Alene that year, and CCI/Speer provided tours of their factories for all of the competitors for a day or two before the shoot. It was well worth the stop, and it's too bad if they don't normally give public tours. But I suppose they have their reasons, darn it!:(
Thanks for posting the link to the video though, il.bill.:)

Just on why more .22 ammo isn't produced in the U.S. The Keefe report took that question up a few years ago. Here's a link to that article.

https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2015/11/19/keefe-report-why-can-t-i-find-22-ammo/

Basically the priming operation for rimfire ammo is entirely different from centerfire ammo, more expensive to manufacture and more dangerous to operate. No new rimfire plants have been built in the U.S. in over 40 years. It is more expensive to build rimfire plants and that cost may not be financially justified in the long run.

Various panics fueled the shortage of rimfire ammo (Obama's election, the threat of Hillary, etc.) so folks were hoarding it, certain that we would soon be plunged into a dystopian future where we'd have to trade bricks of .22 ammo for our Maxi-Pads. That didn't happen so...

Somehow seeing that video made it a little more fun shooting up some .22LRs.

CCI Mini-Mags ran flawlessly in my Walther PPQ M2, Ruger 10-22, GSG 1911-22 conversion on a Colt 1911, and even through my Chiappa .22LR AR15 Upper. The Ruger Single Six, Marlin XTR Bolt Action, and H&R Model 922 will have to wait their turn for a later range date.
