Videogames for Dad

I want to get a videogame my dad might enjoy. So far he sneers at all of them, except one section of Crash bandicoot warped where you shoot down blimps with a cartoony biplane. He'll play that for hours, because it's "cool". So I need combat game. I was wondering if anyone has experience with these, I was thinking about:

Tom clancy games (rainbow six, Ghost recon)
Medal of Honor: Frontline

Or any other Ps2 games that might do the trick. I think he'd adore MoH:FL because it's set in the real world, but it is only rated T so it can't be very realistic.

I really have no idea all I played is RPGs and platforms.

battlefield 1942 is in my opinion the best one.


You can do infantry, medic, engineer, use correct weapons
jump in tanks, take over enemy machineguns and equipment.

You can also fly fighters and bombers use heavy guns on ships
or big howitzers on land.

Very fun game and hard to get bored.

Each map is based on an actual WW2 battle about 17 total
from north africa to pacific islands and europe.

Try it out either for PC or Playstation 2

My kids have Medal of Honor for PS2. Its kinda neet. You get to use Garands, Colt 45, Thompson, Grenades, and sniper rifles (03A3), and run around shooting Nazi's. You start stormin the beach at Normandy, get to stow away on a U-boat.

I played it once for a couple hours and it was fun. I'm not real big into video games but if he is he'd like it.

Medal of Honor Frontline. This is the newest version and considered one of the best shooting games available.

I bet this is gonna get locked down soon, but for good gun handling, check out Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. It's more a combat simulation than a shoot 'em up.

I second Battlefield 1942... Quite realistic, at least as far as vehicle graphics, gravity affecting rockets, etc... It also has a mod out now called desert combat, which is based in today with f-16's and harriers and c-130's, etc... Takes some getting used to, but is a lot of fun. If he is anything like my dad, the game should be as simple as possible. remember, these guys grew up with pong and atari-start him out simple, maybe a plane simulation - Microprose and janes do well with simulations. Go with SOCOM US Navy SEALS and a broadband adapter. The game is broadband only, but if you have that connection it could well be the last action game you buy.

I've had it since release in August, and have played it almost exclusively since December, when I got the broadband adaptor. The online multiplayer makes it better than any other tactical game I've ever played.

The most realistic combat game to date bar none, is "Operation Flashpoint". Anyone who has played it knows why.

Yes, I've played it. I much prefer Ghost Recon. The firearm selection is vastly superior, especially with add-on packs.

KIM this is the Ps2 version.

I already asked on videogame boards but those guys wouldn't know the difference between an m4 and a keyblade so I was looking for a more informed group, and this is certainly a higher age group.

My vote goes to Ghost Recon and Raven Shield as well.

My vote goes to Operation Flashpoint for the PC and for Medal of Honor frontline for PS2. I played Conflict: Desert Storm and it was ok but by no means great.

Frontline is a good game. I like the guns you get to use: garand, P38, Colt 45, etc... I like reading about WWII so this game fit me just fine.

You prefere Ghost recon to Operation Flashpoint? Uck! the Grameplay isn't even close! You can't even go prone in Ghost Recon!!!

You can go prone in Ghost Recon.

I prefer the team controls in Ghost Recon to those in RainbowSix 3. It's easy to adjust your teams on the fly, instead of running a pre-planned route.

I don't know where you've been, but Operation Flashpoint has so many add-ons, it would be difficult to count them. On one of my missions (built it myself, using the editor), I take my SpecOps SAW on my Little Bird gunship to the bridge, where I take out a group of infantry, stealing their BMP2 in the process,... The graphics aren't so hot, but the size of the worlds and the variety of weapons/vehicles you can use fully makes up for it.

BF1942 has cartoon physics, but it's easy to get into and play pretty well. The learning curve isn't nearly what it is in OFP.

IL2 Sturmovik is a lot of fun if he likes to do air to ground attack, with prop planes. It's very realistic: take-off, fly to target, kill target, take damage, limp home, land (hopefully). Forgotten Battles, the sequel, has been less than stellar so far.

PC gaming is really the way to go.

I can't recommend much for the PS2, except SOCOM.

On the PC side, America's Army is good, great if you get a good team. It's only got a limited selection of weapons(You can choose from the M249 SAW, M16A2, M16A2 w/ M203, M24 and M82 sniper rifle. And on some maps the M16A2 is replaced with the M4/M4A1. ) but it's pretty realistic without becoming too "cuss, expletive, this game is so cussing frustrating". Multi-player only though...

Splinter Cell...

It actually comes out for the ps2 today. Some major retailers may not get it in until tomorrow (the 9th). I have been anticipating this game for a long time due to its realistic use of firearms and stealth.

Splinter Cell is really hard. I have it for the X Box. Lots os stealth, not much ammo, only a pistol and auto sniper type rifle. The PS2 version`s graphics won`t be as good but I think they`res a couple of added missions to make up for it.

I thought Conflict, Desert Storm was better than Ghost Recon although that was a good game too.

MOH is good but I don`t think Battlefield 1942 is out for PS2?

You can find some of these games used if you look around. Just make sure you get the manuals with them.

Conflict: Desert Storm is pretty good. I don't think it's better than Ghost Recon, though. It's too cartoony. Still a good game, though. Splinter Cell is also pretty good but, as stated earlier, it's hard. The rifle you use in that game would be pretty sweet if it were real. All kinds of neat ammo and stuff.

Oh yeah, in Ghost Recon when you complete missions according to different requirements you pick up new weapons, which I thought was pretty cool.

I have Ghost Recon for PS2. It's terrific, the missions are excellent and there's plenty of selection.
